The idea for 'Little Boa Peep' actually sounded pretty interesting, definitely one of the more interesting story ideas for the Blue Racer series and a different scenario. It is not novel for animation, but it is very different from the formula that Blue Racer's outings with the beetle had that most of the series loosely followed as well sans the beetle. Didn't care for the Blue Racer series overall, but 'Little Boa Peep' did have potential to be one of the better cartoons in the series.
'Little Boa Peep' didn't manage that potential. It is not one of the worst Blue Racer cartoons, others are more mean-spirited, even more predictable and had less likeable characters. It is though one of the series' biggest potential wastes, with only the first third showing much promise or living up to the premise. This didn't continue and the quality of the material went drastically downhill and showed the usual bad things and even more silliness than usual.
Am going to start with the good. Some of the colours are quite nice as is Blue Racer's character animation. The music has been consistently good throughout the series and consistently the best thing of the cartoons, that's the case here. Just love its upbeat character and the theme tune accompanying the creative opening titles is catchy.
Did think a few lines from Blue Racer were amusing and the owl, sheepdog and wolf were nice characters in their too brief appearances, the wolf being the funniest. The ending was cute and different for the series. Larry D Mann does nicely as Blue Racer. The cartoon starts off very well.
However, Blue Racer is pretty one note here, the series didn't do a particularly good job at varying his character, and the way he is written requires some serious suspension of disbelief. Just didn't buy at how he could be this idiotic, it really dumbs down a character that is usually crafty. Most of the support is bland and not on screen long enough to make enough impression. The animation is mostly flat and rushed looking.
Writing has amusing moments but mostly is too silly and lacking in wit. The gags are too few and generally too stale, while the story is repetitious and predictable, as well as increasingly ridiculous from the middle act onwards. The premise had a lot of potential but you wouldn't think so from the over silliness.
In summary, watchable but not particularly good still. 5/10.
