Dark, calm, nihilistic, graphic
CarLIokffgE11 October 2023
Two segments, two snuff movies with the same actress who self-harms. Cruelty and loneliness are at the heart of Women's Flesh my Red Guts, and also appetite. The film is melancholy, touching and the makeup is exceptional: it's ultra-graphic and refined/sober at the same time. Tamakichi Anaru is the director with the most realistic approach in my opinion. Realism is subjective, so I will say that my realism and his match up best. This woman's self-mutilation had to be realistic to convey emotions. There is obviously a certain sensuality too.

When the loneliness is too great, the suffering of the mind too great, is the body the last defense? Is it strong enough?

One of my favorite films.

Twisted Japanese Gore
EVOL66616 October 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This whole review is going to be spoilers, because there is no story to this film, it's just two scenes of extreme gore. In one scene, a girl goes into the bathroom and decides to f!ck herself with a toothbrush. I guess going into the bedroom for a vibrator was just too much work... Anyway, she does her business with the toothbrush until she begins to bleed copiously. This still doesn't stop her and she keeps going for several more moments. When she's done "pleasuring" herself (although if I ever meet a woman who considers bloody-toothbrush-masturbation a "pleasure", I'm running the **** away- and I know some pretty freaky chicks ;) she then starts licking and sucking the blood off of her fingers. At this point, I guess she decides she needs a little snack, so she decides to bite her finger off and chew on it for a while. I guess it's not as appetizing as she thought because she spits it out onto the floor. she finally decides to strangle herself with some sort of scarf. That's 1 scene...

#2 has a woman (I think it's the same girl, but I can't be positive, my copy is pretty grainy and I was watching it on a portable DVD player...) sitting in a corner with some fruit and a knife and fork. When she tires of the fruit, she decides to stab herself in the leg with the fork. She cuts her stomach open with the knife and pulls her guts out. I guess the fruit wasn't enough for this freak, because she starts to grub on her own entrails. When that's not enough, she graphically cuts her tongue off, then finally dies.

WOMENS FLESH is strange. VERY rough and graphic and will not be enjoyable to almost anyone. I thought it was OK because I'm always looking for "shocking" and "disturbing" material. This one delivered in the sense that it is just over-the-top nastiness - but there is absolutely no story, so I found it sorta dull. Fans of AUGUST UNDERGROUND type stuff will like this, anyone else will be sickened. Definitely shocking and gory, but no story drops it a few points in my book. Also, it appears that the film-makers added a grainy effect to the production that was sort of distracting. Recommended if you just want some nasty gore. 7/10

Disgusting, weird entertainment

Actually I wonder why this kind of movies are being created. On the other hand I could ask same question about many other things, like some music genres. This movie is from 1999 by the way.

Two females seem to suffer from past traumas. Both commit blood-filled suicides with way more imaginary/graphic ways than just shotgun-to-mouth. There is no dialogs at all, porn-movie-like music plays on background while the girls are getting cut and so on. If you like blood, more blood, toothbrush, a fork, and japan shock, this is a have-to-check-this-out. If you like mainstream horror, this is not for you. In fact, maybe 3rd attempt as sober, I managed to watch this from the beginning to the end. Some scenes could have been shorter, that's why only 8.

At the end of the DVD interesting trailer about a (short?) movie called "A Dead Person" (from the same co.), lots of smashed heads, very bloody corpses, severed heads, dead babies and so on.

Extremely shocking and revolting Japanese gore film.

Warning: Spoilers
A disturbed Japanese girl locks herself in the bathroom and begins violently masturbating with a toothbrush until she bleeds. She then bites off one of her own fingers and eats it and finishes up by strangling herself. There is also another Asian woman sitting in a corner who begins mutilating herself with a fork and a knife. She slices open her stomach, pulls out her intestines and gnaws on them, cuts off her tongue and stabs herself."Women's Flesh" by Tamakichi Anaru is easily one of the darkest Japanese splatter films I have ever seen. This is surely very unpleasant and hard to watch stuff,so fans of extreme gore will be satisfied. The film actually reminded me a little bit "Naked Blood" or Masami Akita's "Lost Paradise",but it's much more graphic.A must-see for fans of disturbing Japanese transgressions.8 out of 10.

For fans of extreme splattery nastiness.

Low-grade, Japanese obscurity Women's Flesh: My Red Guts consists of two shot-on-video segments depicting gruelling scenes of graphic self-mutilation, all designed to appear as gut-churningly real as possible: in the first, a woman chews off one of her fingers and chokes herself to death with a scarf; the woman in part two stabs herself in the leg with a fork, cuts open her belly, chows down on her guts, slices off her tongue, and eventually kills herself by thrusting the fork into her forehead.

There's no plot to speak of and hardly any dialogue—just plenty of extremely bloody imagery designed to appease fans of ultra-violent, transgressive pseudo-snuff. This super-sick effort certainly has the right look and feel to it—the makers have gone out of their way to give their work an authentic home-made feel, complete with crappy, z-grade image quality, amateurish video effects (solarised and negative pictures), and a lo-fi soundtrack—but the film does tend to drag on far too long for its own good leading to a fair amount of tedium. At about half the runtime, the whole thing could have been much more effective.

N.B. Like the others who have commented on this film, my copy also featured a couple of trailers for some really harsh documentaries.

6.5 out of 10, rounded up to 7 for IMDb.

Very good movie

Warning: Spoilers
I quite enjoyed this film. Yes, it's quite obvious that the Gore is fake but I love how it looks like it was filmed in a living room and edited by a sophomore in high school. The fact that it doesn't actually look real is why I enjoyed it. Its a great concept. I personally like the way it was executed and it was just a genuinely good film. I know many others may disagree but it was very interesting. I'm definitely going to have hallucinations of somebody mutilating themselves a few feet in front of me now! I quite personally enjoyed the way it just seemed so real while the Gore was fake, the way the characters acted just seemed so natural. There isn't much of a plot if any but I still liked it.

10/10.
