Silk Degrees typifies the movie you would see on the shelf of your local video store, look at it quickly, shrug your shoulders, and say "meh..."

Warning: Spoilers
When actress Alex Ramsey (Shelton) witnesses a murder by gangster Degrillo (Des Barres), she has to go into witness protection. Degrillo had previously been under surveillance by federal agents Rick Baker (Singer, not the famed makeup artist portraying himself) and Johnson (Hamill). Ramsey doesn't want to leave her glamorous Hollywood life, though she is tired of being bossed around by her TV director, Rene (Gottfried). Baker and Johnson decide the best course of action is to go to a rural inn and get some country livin' during her sequestration. While hiding out from Degrillo and his goons, they meet local folk such as Violet (Barbeau) and Sheila (Allen), who work at the inn, as well as bumpkins looking to sell meth to bikers. Schultz (Napier) is a classic WYC (White Yelling Chief) who constantly screams at Baker to do his job. But naturally there's romance in the air as Ramsey and Baker – as well as Sheila and Johnson – succumb to the cabin fever and pay-cable 90's nudity ensues. Will our heroes return to civilization un-shot at and intact? Erotic thrillers. Gilbert Gottfried. Two things that have gone together since time immemorial. But for some reason, this time the two don't mix. Silk Degrees typifies the movie you would see on the shelf of your local video store, look at it quickly, shrug your shoulders, say "meh..." and keep walking by. Hence, it's a "walk-by", a term we would like to start using. Having Mark Hamill and Marc Singer be partners was a novel idea, if only for the fact that we can see the both of them together in the same place at the same time, thus proving that they are indeed two different people. The difference in the two men is academic; casting them as partners is just confusing. At least have one of the federal agents have dark hair, a mustache, a scar, something to distinguish the two. But judging by the mediocrity of it all, the writers must have said "meh..." too.

So why should we, as viewers, care? Is some nudity meant to be enough to keep our attention? Because even that is doled out sparingly. Fan favorite Napier just goes through the motions as he did so many times during his 90's career, Hamill and Barbeau don't even really need to be there, and the presence of Gilbert Gottfried is off-putting. To be fair, Shelton is attractive and does a decent job, and Singer puts in a respectable amount of energy. But the whole thing is lazily written, and it's nothing you haven't seen a million times before. For a far better movie about someone put under witness protection, check out Hit List (1989). Silk Degrees isn't softcore porn, so fans of that will be unsatisfied, it's not a biopic of Boz Scaggs where he reveals the secrets of the Lido Shuffle, and it's not a decent mystery, thriller, procedural, or drama, so fans of those will be left wanting. And it's certainly not an action movie, though there is one really funny moment at the end (that should have happened a lot earlier, and more moments like it to boot - more stupidity on the part of the filmmakers) - but that's not enough to save it.

The perfect time and place for Silk Degrees was Skinemax in the mid-90's. In 2015 (or whenever you happen to be reading this), it, sadly, doesn't cut it.

A cop/buddy movie. No Oscar performance but still fun.

Warning: Spoilers
I admit that this is not the best film of the month that I have watched. However, this isn't to bad of a show. Mark Hamill from Star Wars and Marc Singer from V the miniseries and the Beastmaster saga are a couple of federal agents who get assigned to protect a beautiful witness from a man who wants her dead. Its got it all, chase scenes, light T&A, witty banter between the male leads and a charming performance by Deborah Shelton, the films heroine. This is a tale of seduction, betrayal and murder. Give it a shot and you will not be disappointed.

WARNING! BEYOND THIS POINT LIES SPOILERS! Marc Singer and Mark Hamill are federal agents hot on the trail of international killer Degrillo (Michael Des Barret). The two agents are in the middle of a stakeout when their equipment accidentally receives a transmission from a nearby camera crew that is filming a TV show featuring the beautiful Alex Ramsey (Deborah Shelton). Gilbert Godfrey plays an irate director who is not happy with her creative input and just wants her to stop trying to be creative and just help him make a substandard television program that will be sandwiched between commercials. Unhappy with this situation she storms off to her trailer. Meanwhile, Degrillo finds the bug that has been placed in his room, he knows that his mistress has to have turned on him and our heroes race to save her. Cutting back to Alex as she sees the murder of the mistress and now becomes a witness to a crime that will finally be able to put this man away once and for all. When the agents report back to headquarters with their witness in hand, Marc Singer is dressed down for disobeying orders, and while the rest of the team is sent to catch the bad guy, they are tasked by their boss Schultz (Charles Napier) with protecting their witness until she can testify at trial.

Taking their witness to a remote cabin in the woods, the two agents do their best to keep Alex out of danger and out of view. This is not as easy as they hoped because she is very well known. Both the manager of the lodge and her newest employee, a buxom blond that instantly shows a serious interest in Mark Hamill, know her from her TV show where she plays a hard hitting female cop. An already difficult job is made harder with their charge not being happy with the setup of the room or the quality of the food.

Slowly, she does warm up to her protectors, as she realizes that this is not just another job to them, and that they are concerned with her safety and prove that no matter what they will do anything, even risking their lives to protect her.

END OF SPOILER!!!

Look, I could go on for another few paragraphs, but if I do, it will give away a lot of surprises that really make this movie unique and fun to watch. The point is its fun to watch, has a great cast of well known B+ list actors and actresses including Playboy Playmate of the month December 1987 and Playmate of the Year 1988 India Allen, look her up on IMDb for fun. Basically, this film has it all, a surprise ending, edgy content, the works. It is not an academy award winning piece and it is not meant to be. Its light entertainment and excels at being an agreeable way to pass the afternoon. Mark Hamill makes a great team with Marc Singer and everybody gets to have fun watching them do what they do best. So over all B+ for the film with A+ for what the leads did with what they had to work with. You may not want to see this film after reading all of the reviews. If you think you can make a better film, go do it. If you can't, or just want to have fun, then get a copy of this film and watch it. You won't be disappointed.

A b+ b movie
pepe4u227 December 2011
Watched this movie on cable the other night. The acting was of the lower budget variety but still not bad and the dialogue was not the usual clunky variety. There is the requisite nude scenes and inplausiblities but the actors all tried and did what they had to do to get this movie to go at a good pace. Deborah Shelton is at her peak beauty and her nude scenes were very good . Marc Singer did the male eye candy and Mark Hamill proved why he has had no career since Star Wars as he does not have much screen presence. My only complaint was though i never was scared of the villain who was less scary than a hungry 300 lb person needing a big mac.

Good for lazy afternoons or late night watching

Warning: Spoilers
Overall, the acting and directing is not top notch, but is that really what you are expecting here?

SPOILER ALERT: The villain is not scary and seems to have the calmest sense of rage I have ever seen. And what was the point in having him using an asthma inhaler? Mark Singer is mostly terrible as he delivers lines in an amateur fashion. Hard to believe he gets the girl while showing her how incompetent he is. Mark Hamill is not believable as a FBI agent. Not only does he appear to have the physique of a bowling alley attendant, he dresses as one as well. How are we supposed to believe this guy picks up the smokin' hot blonde? Some of the action is not very realistic and a few things just don't make sense. But the storyline is OK, it moves along at a decent pace, and there are beautiful girls to look at!
