heard the buzz for this movie and just was so disappointed. the movie starts not even referring to the Germans or Nazis but called them the enemy oh my goodness sanitizing of history strike one. I watched and was shaking head on the continuity as one scene would have night and then go to day and the strange pacing for the tom hardy character as one scene is battling the Germans on limited gas and an hour later he is still flying and lands what the heck. plus this is a war zone but the horrors of fighting also are sanitized with pc sanctimony I was bored watching as one never can feel a connection with the characters which is something I noticed in the wonderful era of war movies of the 1960's as in that period all major actors seemed to be in the military which gave a certain gravitis to their performances in this movie all performances are hollow and unengaging.
wonderful show from netflix
saw promo for this show and remembered seeing GLOW late night on Detroit TV when I was a boy and thought why not give it a try and I will say the show was engrossing and very watchable. the characters are engrossing and great for binge watching which I did. the acting and interaction of the characters are sensational and I wish network TV would produce good shows like this and this is why Netflix is viewing for the future such as hbo.
Rogue One (2016)
what a waste
watched this last night and oh my god what a waste of time. first again another star wars movie that is a copy and paste from the original movie. the leads have the charisma of road kill the effects were loud and just all over the place unlike john wick where the action scenes are were done and have fluidity the fx on this movie all over the place and one has no idea where in the world the participants are in comparison to the action at times. the dialogue is wooden and just a waste of time and a cash grab for the studio.
Wonder Woman (2017)
typical dc promise turns wrong
Went to this movie with high expectations and the first third of movie started terrific with terrific character development and wonderful acting then with the introduction of the Chris Pine the movie starts a quick descent. Pine plays the damsal in distress and has the screen presence of a slug no emotion and just a pretty face but vacuous. then the movie shifts to London and we are met with an array of characters who come and go in a heartbeat. then we go to the part that absolutely annoyed me is how this movie treated in many ways the character of Ludendorff and I hope the producers are ashamed of the way they showed a true military leader in such disregard that they killed him in movie when the real Ludendorff died almost 20 years later is a joke and as a person who's family served in the first war under Ludendorff I found this offensive. now if they had any clue why not just make up a character like movies have done for the last 100 years and use some creativing have the aries character move from Ludendorff character to an obscure Austrian corporal known as Hitler. also the scene where pines character infiltrated the German high command castle was stupid too having an character of eastern descent driving a car to a German retreat and they would not be alarmed stupid and ludicrous. plus the pacing of movie slow could have been tightened easily 20 minutes and the constant cuts in action scenes made me want to watch good action scenes like in john wick and john wick 2. the best part of movie was gal gadat the lead giving a wonderful performance everything else was an abdomination
a fun gory yarn
I remember watching this movie as a boy and found it again on youtube. This movie is funny and over the top with some interesting special effects. The story revolves around a man called Cameron Vale, a seemingly homeless man possessed by voices. In reality the voices are because he is a scanner. The movie also has another powerful scanner named Darryl Revik who in one scene makes a man's head explode using his scanner powers. Well Vale is recruited to hunt down and find Revik and this leads to a showdown between the two. There are twists and turns and this movie is just a joy to watch but if I had one big problem with the movie it is with the lead Stephen Lack has a complete lack of presence on camera and his acting is so bland and wooden I thought he was a homeless guy they hired off the corner. Compared to the nice performances by the alluring Jennifer O'Neill, Patrick McGoohan and the superb Micheal Ironside, Lack's lack of talent really shows. This movie was done by David Cronenberg who as usual delivers the goods.
Dark Places (2015)
could have been better
just finished watching this movie and as much as I liked it I felt it could have been better. the story is actually two stories linking the past and present over a grisly murder in a small town involving the lone survivor and the murderer who was the brother who may have been falsely convicted. the performances were good though Charlize theron was her usual standout though I wish there were less herrings and the situation with the ex girlfriend and daughter seemed somewhat tacked on. I wanted to see more of the both story arcs and how it came to be the lead is the way she was I cannot believe what I am going to say but I wish it ran a few minutes longer to flesh out the characters. a good watch so enjoy.
The Deep Blue Sea (2011)
dreary and very stagey
I have seen both versions of this movie the original with vivien leigh and this with Rachel weitz and I must admit I found the original much better. the story about the love of an older lady and a younger man during the 1950's not as open or accepted as nowadays. I found the problem with this movie was it felt so stagey and at the same time it lacked the passion of the original. I found Rachel Weitz giving a sleepwalking performance yet I have seen her in many other movies but here she was just not with it. Most of the cast seemed so morose and bored it was for me a hard movie to watch though there was one improvement upon the original and that was the love interest as the actor in this version was lively and believable unlike the actor in the original who actually looked older than the character in the play is to be. I will say I was disappointed because this movie could have been a wonderful experience but instead was so boring.
Triple 9 (2016)
what was this
went to this movie was excited by the trailer and boy was I wrong. the original story that the talented cast signed up for was awesome I assume something then happened as this movie was a jangled mess and almost was a bipolar experience. there was too many subplots too little time for talents like woody harrelson and kate winslett instead of a quality crime drama we were exposed to a plot that veered all over the place. the premise of crimes being done by cops was intriguing but junk like the subplot of the child , Russian mob was just way out there. just a waste of time and this movie could be a easy front runner for a raspberry award.
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
an action extravaganza
watch this movie after positive word of mouth and I must say the compliments I heard were short compared to the spectacular movie experience this was. the action scenes were out of this world with terrific action pieces that were intense and terrific. the visuals of this movie were cutting edge and made this experience so raw and so memorable. even though mad max on title he is more of a sidekick to the furiosa character who was the lead and played terrifically by Charlize Theron who shines above all in this movie. The plot was interesting but it did not get in the way of the action which was relentless and absorbing. This is a movie deserving of all the accolades it has gotten and in the future this movie will be remembered more than the movies that won at the Oscars for this movie has staying power while all the others are just willow whisp in the wind.
Ride Along (2014)
just a joy
went to this movie and it advertised itself as an action comedy and it hits the mark. this movie is filled with many laughs some terrific actions scenes and I was entertained which I feel is the most important part of any movie. the chemistry between the leads is what makes this movie rise above the standard movie in this genre and I laughed at so many scenes like the kevin hart dealing with the various 126 calls along with the hospital scenes and him using his blackhammer schtick. ice cube plays a great straight man to kevin hart's character but I will point out one truly funny scene and that is the scene with kevin hart dealing the young man thinking of skipping school it was a riot. so if you want to just laugh and eat some popcorn this movie is for you.
terrifc little movie
I found this a terrific little movie with terrific performances. The movie is about three pals who plan out crimes and this comes to the attention of a crime lord who forces them to go through with the crime. The movie narrative is sharp and on point but what makes this movie great is the chemistry amongst the leads and the movies pace is terrific. I think the female lead is the most powerful performer she has a great look and a wonderful presence on screen. Ryan Reynolds give one of his better performances while the bad guy has a nasty evil to him. I have watched this movie a couple of times and it never fails to keep me watching plus the ending has to be watched closely ala the usual suspects. Just sit back and enjoy for this movie is worth the watch.
The Deep Blue Sea (1955)
art imitating life
I watched this movie on youtube last night and being a Vivien Leigh fan I was enthralled by this movie. The story is of a slightly older lady involved with a somewhat younger man after leaving a morbid marriage to a nice man but one that does not share her passion for life. The movie starts with an attempt at suicide which more was a cry for help and attention. From there by use of superb dialogue and flashbacks we see how the star crossed lovers meet and fall in love from both their perspectives. You can tell that has been adapted from a play but as the movie moves on one is amazed too by how life has changed since the making of this movie how more empowered women are in pursuing what they want. I found Vivien's character dominating every scene and noticed her character is stronger that she knows but her choice in partner was lax he is boorish lazy and a cad but she loves him while her estranged hubby is stable and dull. If I had one complaint it would be with the male lead for a man who was to be younger he looked almost as old as the hubby and the acting was poor I was shocked when I saw he won an award for this but not Miss Leigh.
The reason I said art imitating life is that is almost mirrored Miss Leigh and her marriage to Sir Lawrence with her illness and her affair with Peter Finch and how she ended up her companion Jack Merrivale.
The Great Escape (1963)
7.5 for a rousing adventure
Loved this movie was action filled and exciting with the stunt work for the Steve McQueen chase scene was a classic. The movie is about a true escape from a POW camp during WW2. The movie was star studded and well done and I think the characters that I adored the most were the James Garner character and the Donald Pleasance characters as they just brought a humanity to the screen. I liked the fact that the movie was full of character and had a sense of hope in it as the prisoners tunnelled out yet if I did have a problem with the movies it was with the Richard Attenbrough character and his cohorts as the leaders. I found they did nothing in many regards while everyone else was working hard with the tunnel while their characters just did squat. I was not sad to see them shot but was saddened when Donald Pleasance character died and that is because they were unlikeable compared to the rest.
Waterloo Bridge (1940)
a terrific melodrama
I was bored tonight so looked and found this wonderful gem of a movie. The title actually is the catalyst for this drama. First we meet the star crossed lovers then we see the heroine fall from grace and at the end how the movie ends. The acting is superb and I would like to say when Miss Leigh is on the screen it crackles with life and energy and watch her eyes how she does not have to say a word as her eyes are her voice I find that is such a skill she has and in addition her eyes are mesmerizing. At the start we find her character young and full of love and happiness and then watch her fall into despair over a love she thinks she has lost but then when she finds out that her love is alive she cannot live with the shame that she brought upon herself. I was moved and this movie I could watch over and over just for Miss Leigh. Robert Taylor was good along with the fine character actors in the MGM casting. In many ways you could say that Vivien Leigh had a skill at playing the doomed heroine but she is so good and yes so gorgeous.
How to Be Single (2016)
this is a light easy fluff movie and something one can watch and just enjoy. I found all performances but Dakota Johnson fun and lively. though there are multiple stories I found the screen jump when rebel Wilson was on and I wish there was more of her because I found her character a firecracker of that gave the movie the spark. the leslie mann character was in many ways a redux of her knocked up character but I was not complaining because she plays that character better than others and her love story was good. my complaint is with Dakota Johnson I wish she inherited talent from her parents as I find her voice drone like and her face never changes from that blank look. the one story about the barkeep and the renter upstairs I would have liked to see more of that than the Dakota character because it almost seemed to be a tacked on part yet I wanted more because I liked the characters. all in all a good date movie and something nice to see.
I have to admit I never heard of this comic character so I went to see this movie with excitement and curiosity and was treated to the best comic movie since the original iron man. unlike the iron man sequels and the other thor, captain America and disappointing avengers flicks this movie sparkles and is not so cookie cutter. ryan Reynolds is terrific in the lead with many witty comments including a few at his expense making the is movie fun and original plus the r rating allowed this movie to move into more adult direction than the other marvel properties. I found the story fun while the action was well done and it seemed everyone making this movie enjoyed themselves and did not phone in any performances and I hope to see more r rated comic book adaptions while seeing less of the cookie cutter and after seeing this I look forward to the sequel because I totally enjoyed it
Zoolander 2 (2016)
tired and sleepwalking
well I like the original and the trailer did look promising so I thought I would go well the joke was on me. this movie was dull and all performances were basically phoned in..i found the humor forced the scenarios dull and to be honest when I start to see will Ferrell in a movie I might have to do a Samuel l Jackson minus two on any review I am so tired of him playing a loud obnoxious yeller and screamer god expand your range. I was so disappointed in the Kirsten wiig part she is so funny but got nothing here to work with here ...I found this just a dull experience and a leading contender for worst movie of this year. the sad part is there is so much talent here on this movie and there was some ideas to make a funny movie but this movie just went through the motions.
The Prisoner of Zenda (1937)
a wonderful movie
This movie is everything one wants in a movie action, romance, intrigue and this production hits it one the nose. The story is set in a kingdom where their is intrigue behind the proclamation of the new king. The story involves the man who would be king, his evil half brother and an interloper who is related distantly. Well the movie moves with speed and elan the princess is gorgeous and beguiling. The fight scenes are ripe with flare and bravado. The acting superb by the leads and the supporting cast superb. This movie is in the grandest stage of classic movie making as it takes good story material and makes it alive. To me as an avid movie watcher this is why sometimes older movies are great as the story and production are memorable unlike too many movies of this generation which seem to much copy and paste and generic.
Corner Gas (2004)
laugh free TV
well I live in Saskatchewan and literally 30 minutes away from where this crap was made. I find the show totally laugh free TV with acting at the same depth of junior high interpretation. the lead is bland, the actors playing his parents are just horrid. the local idiot is dumber than dirt, the ethnically diversed male officer is a sterotype. this show is what is wrong with Canadian produced shows at their worse no talent, no style and no clue. the only thing that keeps it from being a 0 rating is at least the two young ladies in the show are decent eye candy but again talent challenged. any time watching this show is time stolen from me and I have watched two episodes so I wish to get that hour back.
Banged Up Abroad (2007)
I do not mind watching this show but as per the people caught I have absolute no pity for their stupidity and ignorance.it is hard to feel sorry for jerks trying to do illegal things and the phrase you reap what you sow. I wonder if these losers are allowed to travel abroad because of there past. plus let us be truthful most of these people shown really show no regret for their idiot choices and I only wonder how many other dumb decisions they have made. the show is well shot though the characters of the loser protagonists are shown in too good of a light and the police in these shows tend to be stereotypes but then I guess they have to be to bring pity upon these idiots banged up abroad
The Ridiculous 6 (2015)
cruel beyond description
may I start review with this caveat I could not watch this movie to the end as I was so repulsed. this alleged comedy was foisted upon us by Netflix who do make good shows well this must be a counter balance to it. the jokes were racist, stupid and mind numbing. as I saw some of the actors in the movie I thought how could people with talent like john tuturro and nick nolte be in this are they being blackmailed, if the us army wants to inflict true pain and suffering onto guantanimo bay internees have them watch this because this movie is so brutal. the plot is scattershot and just a set up for the silly sketches for the alleged comedians to do their skits but do not watch this with any thinking member of society
The Big Short (2015)
a wonderful movie
this is a great movie with terrific performances that show the behind the scenes look at the housing crisis that triggered the housing crisis in the USA. all performances less one are on point and poignant I was entraptured by the goings on behind the scenes, the questions and the research and the duplicity of banks, governments and regulation to deny the error of their ways..Christian bale, ryan gosling and mr40 year old virgin are standouts the only character I found off key was brad pitt who had the that stoned looked to his character much like his stoner looking performance in world war Z. I recommend this movie if one wants a thinking movie .
Daddy's Home (2015)
went to watch this movie and was very disappointed as the movie was a paint by the numbers with literally phoned in grab the paycheque performances. this movie deals with a step father trying to blend in with his new family and this is interrupted by the the appearance of the biological dad. Well their is a competition between the dad's for the love of the kids and mom and what you saw on the trailer was the full extent of the jokes. what I found the most annoying was the will Ferrell performance I find him silly and very idiotic and I swear he has phoned in the same performance for the last ten years and I am tired of his historonics and schtick . I noticed people ripping adam sandler about his performances well Ferrell should be lambasted too. this movie was just tired yet I enjoyed it better than the new star wars so that should be an accomplishment.
this was a fun movie with many a laugh and enjoyable. It may not be the greatest movie I saw but I laughed and enjoyed this performance by all involved. the plot was hackneyed but that still works when the performances are good and the laughter I heard surrounding me told me that yes this movie is fine. both leads had moments and very funny. the party seen was funny and this movie was plain enjoyable and unlike the horrid daddys home or star wars I did not have to look at phone to see what time it was because the pacing was wonderful and the movie was better. so just watch this movie for the enjoyment and the laughs and this is a wonderful date movie too.
Ride Along 2 (2016)
well went to this movie because I enjoyed the first and to be honest I enjoyed the sequel..though this movie is formulatic and yet I laughed often because this movie has chemistry amongst the leads and it makes the movie watching experience so much better. The banter between ice cube and kevin hart was fun and wonderful and this movie had a good pace and it just made the time blow by unlike daddys home which I saw nothing here felt forced. This had laughs, action and again an apprealing cast which even the bad guy played by Benjamin bratt seemed to have a great time and nobody phoned in the performances. I know sequels are using remakes of the first and are paint by the numbers but this movie was just plain fun.
