Mehul Kumar, the man who gave the cinegoers hits like Tirangaa, Krantiveer and others is a troubled man today. The reason? Well, he has been arrested after an Andheri Court issued a non-bailable warrant against him in a case of funds' misappropriation. The case cites back to the year 2006 when he was dragged to the court by Pen's Jayantilal Gada, after he allegedly misused a loan that was given to him in building a mall in Jamnagar, whereby he was supposed to utilize that money to make a feature film. Pen's lawyer Anjana Baxi said that the Supreme Court has already rejected Kumar's anticipatory bail application. Meanwhile, Jayantilal Gada said that they are happy that Mehul Kumar (who is presently lodged in Arthur Road jail) has been taken into custody.

5 Years after his one-off award-winning stint as a corrupt kidnapper Bihari politician in Prakash Jha's Apaharan, Nana Patekar is back in black. The diabolic politician in Apaharan was more for his friend and favourite collaborator Prakash Jha who had to coax Nana to get back into the evil zone which at one time Nana had dominated with such resonant impact in Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Parinda and Shashilal Nair's Angaar. Thereafter, Nana focused on playing the lead in films Krantiveer and Tirangaa...In fact his next two releases It's My Life and Ab Tak Chappan 2 would feature Nana in the main lead. Breaking his no-villainy rule, Nana plays an out-and-out negative character in Priyadarshan's Malaamal Weekly 2. What's common between films like Tirangaa, Yashwant and Ab Tak Chappan? In each of these films, Nana Patekar has donned the uniform as a law keeper. Also, in each of these, there has been a trademark anger that one associates with the actor. Well, if one thought that cinema like this was relegated to the past then well, hold on, as Nana is at it all over again. He would be seen getting angry all over again - though in a different way - in Shagird where he would be playing a cop.

June 24, 2010: ‘Krantiveer – The Revolution’ releases this Friday. Unfortunately, contrary to it’s name, this Mehul Kumar directed film is not expected to bring any ‘kranti’ at the box office. The film belongs to the era of Nana Patekar and his ‘Krantiveer’ days. Now a decade and a half later, movies belonging to such a genre are passé. However, this doesn’t seem to have deterred the film maker who once made the box office rock with films like ‘Krantiveer’, ‘Tirangaa’ and to an extent ‘Kohraam’. If promos are any indication, he has adopted a similar.

Say Nana Patekar and the images that immediately come to one's mind are those from Parinda, Krantiveer, Tirangaa and Agnisakshi. Each of these films from the 90s had Nana Patekar playing a central protagonist and such intense and powerful was his portrayal of the characters that it became difficult for him to move out of a set image. He did come up with superlative (and different) performances in films like Welcome, Taxi Number 9211, Bluffmaster...
