Great show. Typical 90s
wigzynz-918492 June 2018
I loved the show but I couldn't get over the fact Nick wanted to become human. Surely he could redeem himself by saving more people as a Vampire than he could as a human & there are plenty of ways of getting blood without killing. Blood banks, groupies etc.

A fun show, well acted.
Elewis11956 May 2016
TV series' changed in the 21st century, going from episode centered to season centered, where a story can take several episodes to tell. Some might disagree, but I think that's a good thing. It makes TV shows more engaging.

Forever Knight, obviously, was written during the episode centered era, and while there are consistent themes in this show, each episode is meant to be a unit unto itself, and inevitably there's some kind of corny plots and mediocre stories in there (like the vampire pet episode).

But I remember this show fondly. I used to catch it on late at night after work, when I worked the evening shift and it was a great late night show. A bit of spookiness, a bit of heart and the occasional bit of comedy. The acting was overall very good and the actors played well off each other.

Geraint Wyn Davies played the tortured vampire hero who's basically "Angel", before Angel. A guy who tries to do right to make up for years of blood-lust. Unlike Angel, he didn't get his soul back from a spell. They don't say how it happened and I think that actually works better, cause you get the sense he earned his humanity back over time. Where Angel is brooding, Davies plays the role with a hint of sadness and a ton of regret. Where Angel is always ready to fight, Davies plays the role very cautious of his strength and always willing to talk first. Between the two, I find Davies silently tortured Vampire vastly superior to Angel's stoic/brooding one. While the story telling is better in Angel, the heart and depth of character goes to Davies. He played this role brilliantly, which is interesting cause I've never been much impressed with Davies' other performances but this he did very well.

Nigel Bennett (Lacroix) is brilliant in this show as the old vampire with more strength than anyone else. To say why he's great would give spoilers, but he's a Shakespearean level actor with a talent for being intimidating in a quiet way. He's a favorite of mine.

John Kapelos plays Davies (Nick Knight's) partner for the first two seasons and he's a well known "everyman" actor who plays his role well as the straight man to the difficult to explain things he sees. He played the janitor in breakfast club, and while Bennett is dark and a little scary and Knight (Davies) is haunted, regretful and sad, Kapelos is likable, skeptical, sensible and a straight cop. They make a perfect triangle as 3 vastly different characters. Kapelos & Bennett are almost never on screen at the same time, but they both spend time with Knight and the differences in the roles those 3 play is part of what makes this show work as well as it does.

Catherine Disher was the 4th main character and I found her to be the weakest of the four. She wasn't bad, but she didn't wow me either.

Season one, at least early on, the show seems to not really know where it's going. It was spun off a TV movie and the characters take a while to set, so there are some inconsistencies and if you start with Episode one, you might think it's just a cheesy formula show, and, it was, for a bunch of the first season, but as the characters come into their own it gets better.

For season 3 they changed everything around. Kapelos is replaced by Lisa Ryder (Blond ship captain from Andromeda) and she plays the cop role well enough, though she doesn't have Kapelos' heart, nor his ability to play the straight man.

Pretty boy Ben Bass is also added in the 3rd season as another Vampire who Knight kind of takes under his wing as a guy who doesn't kill people anymore. Bass isn't haunted the way Knight is, and I found his role a little pointless but not unwatchable. The show has some solid episodes in season 3, but I think she show was best in season 2 and the 2nd half of season 1.

The finally was a little disappointing, and, I gather, rushed through production, but the show is still worth checking out. Angel and Twilight both seemed to borrow aspects from this show. It's hard to be original these days. Forever Knight is one of the few original shows.

A Must See for All Lovers of the Vampire Genre
bayardhiler23 March 2017
Vampires have formed the basis of more than a few shows and movies, too many to count, in fact. Some of it's been good, some bad. Finding material that's truly exceptional, however, within the genre takes some digging (As someone who's a movie buff, I can personally attest to this). One of these exceptional pieces is the late night television series "Forever Knight". Airing first on CBS's crime time after prime time line up, it's a show that follows the story of Toronto police Det. Nick Knight (Geraint Wyn Davies) who, unbeknownst to his colleagues, is really an 800 year old vampire seeking redemption by solving crimes while working the night shift. Joining him in this quest is his wise cracking partner, Det. Don Schanke (John Kapelos), (who somehow seems to miss every clue his partner's not mortal!), as well as coroner Dr. Natalie Lambert, the only person in the entire department who knows Nick's secret and whom is committed to finding a way to make Nick human again. But Nick must also contend with interference at every turn by his 2,000 year old former master and vampire maker Lucien Lacroix (Nigel Bennett) who disapproves of his former protege's attempts at morality and does everything he can to make Nick live the vampire life he deems acceptable. Will Nick become human again, or will he be destined to live the life a vampire forever?

As cheesy and slightly ridiculous as the premise is (An 800 vampire as a cop!) "Forever Knight" is one of those shows that somehow, someway just works. The writing is superb, often times injecting depth and further meaning in each episode (often through well done historic flashbacks from across Nick's long life, which were a major bit of the show's fun) and being able to expertly combine a vampire story with that of a police/crime solving procedure type show (which is what "Night" is 50% of the time). And not to mention, the acting is terrific, and in many ways is what makes the show believable and entertaining at the same time. Geraint Wyn Davies is excellent in the lead role, and gives believable pathos to the tortured Nick Knight, a vampire who after living for 800 years desperately wants mortality. Jon Kapelos gives the show a little comedy relief as the always wise-cracking and lovable Schanke, as well as infusing some of that buddy cop aspect to it. Catherine Disher is great as Natalie, who is in many ways the love interest for Nick, and the one who ties Nick to the human world more than anyone else. However, none of this would be nearly as good if it weren't for the wonderful performance of Nigel Bennett as the evil, charming, and devilish Lacroix. Oozing charisma, seduction, and darkness all at the same, Bennett is able to bring a really strong devil-like persona to the character Lacroix, more so than perhaps any other evil vampire overlord, and injects a certain level of danger that should be present in any vampire story. Plus, you'll be treated to a variety of great guest stars, including a certain actress by the name of Carrie Ann Moss of "The Matrix" fame. Though the show may have ended too soon and was perhaps a little rushed, the show stands the test of time. Bottom line, if you love vampires as much as me and can't get enough of them, check out "Forever Knight".

P.S. It's available on you tube.

An interesting and intelligent twist on the vampire myth
A-Ron-219 July 2000
I really like this show. I started watching it on late night TV back when it was originally on (we picked up locally after Letterman) and found myself hooked. Me and my old man would sit up and enjoy this rich and involving tale of one 'man's' search for redemption. There were very few uninteresting episodes (most were in the first season) and the acting and scripts done so seriously and so intelligently that one really could not help but respect the work that went into them.

The show ended on the perfect note and the last season built steadily to that point. There was never a loose thread, never a mis-step, just one enjoyable episode after another that added up to a fantastic viewing experience. If more TV could be this good, I would probably still watch it.

Great Show

I really liked watching Forever Knight again during the Covid-19 epidemic. I especially enjoyed Nigel Bennett's character Lacroix and his inter-action with Nick and Jeanette. Very tongue and cheek at times, but I also enjoyed when they go back in time to Nick's past. Overall a great show to watch

Simply The Best
sweetsandiegirl20 September 2021
So I am writing this in Sept. 2021. Those of you who have never had the pleasure to enjoy watching Forever Knight, or those of you who are very familiar with this fantastic show, will be glad to know it is currently available on Tubi. If you have Roku it is free to view. I am on a binge watch right now, on season one, just starting episode four. I had forgotten how incredible the show is, well acted, well written. I am enjoying visiting with my old (VERY old!) friends in Montreal. It's simple, if you want to see one of the best vampire shows ever, check it out!

Vampires with Family Values
Johnny_West5 February 2023
I always enjoy watching this show. Nick Knight (Geraint Wyn Davies) is the vampire / police detective who does not want to hurt anyone, and he wants to recover his mortal life.

His supporting characters are played by the gorgeous and classy Deborah Duchene as Janette, a fellow vampire. She is always watching out for Nick, and tries to give him good advice. She lived with Nick as his vampire wife for 97 years, and left him because she was bored (her words, not mine).

Nigel Benett plays the master vampire, Lucien Lacroix. He brought Janette over first and later Nicholas. He is always talking about family, and he actually seems to be a decent guy most of the time. On other occasions he creates trouble and pain for Nick, because he wants Nick to recognize him as the master, and a father figure. It is a dysfunctional family, but you see that they are all sincerely trying to do the right thing (but often in the wrong ways).

Catherine Disher plays Dr. Natalie Lambert, the coroner. She spends a lot of time fixing Nick when he gets injured, and engaging in microbial research of Nick's vampire biology. It is unlikely that a county coroner would have such scientific equipment in a coroner's office.

John Kapelos played Schanke (pronouced Skanky), the detective partner to Knight. He was a pretty annoying character who was always making sarcastic remarks, and falling down during chases. Kapelos was usually portrayed as inept and incompetent. Sometimes he solved the case, and a few times Nick allowed him to think he had. I often fast-forward when he starts talking.

After two seasons, Kapelos was replaced by Lisa Ryder. She was a bit stiff as an actress, but a lot better than Kapelos. Later on, Ryder was on Gene Roddenberry's Adromeda and Jason X.

Gary Farmer played the police captain during season one, and he was very thoughtful and had a lot of compassion for people. He was replaced by Natsuko Ohama in season two. She had a very cold and unfriendly personality. She was replaced by Blu Mankuma in the final season. Mankuma played the standard police captain on most police TV shows.

The last season added Ben Bass as Vachon, a vampire who helped out Nick. Vachon was almost the same character as Knight, but with less rules and sexier. It almost seemed like there were two versions of Nick Knight in season 3.

Overall, it seems like every season the writers were trying to make the show different in some way. Perhaps the goal was attracting higher ratings. Unfortunately, Forever Knight was canceled after season 3.

The show had a lot of thoughtful stories about morality, ethics, family values, and questions about good versus evil. It was entertaining without being gory. You got vampire action without too much blood. Unlike other vampire shows, I have watched the DVD set many times, about once a year. I wish there had been a couple more seasons.

An all-time classic...
woodenartcarver27 July 2022
I first saw the show sometime in the late 90's. I watched every episode and later again, whenever I got the chance. These days, with modern streaming services, it is much easier, since I can watch it whenever I want to. For those who speak english: Watch it in English, because some jokes / puns z won't work if you're watching a translated version.

What makes the show one of my absolute favorites ist the "realistic" part of the show. The main characters have to deal with everyday problems like racism, drug abuse, murder,... but also disabilities, Aids, medical research,... or "banalities" like burocracy, being overworked or frustration.

It also makes vampirism more believable, since it combines supernatural influences / explanations with medical / physical approaches. Things like immortality, supernatural strength and flying... put aside, it could just as well be a story about a detective suffering from XP, EPP or a similar disease, which would also cause him to avoid daylight. The vampire storyline adds just what it takes to make it a more exceptional sort of crime show. This is a thing that got a little lost after the 2nd season, when it shifted more the the supernatural side.

I too hoped for the show to continue (in the 90's) but after more than 20 years, chances got very slim.

I'd say that the show will always be worth watching it, because it's well made, entertaining and timeless so to speak, because the basic elements of the stories haven't changed much in the last 50 years and I'm quite sure they won't for at least another 50.

It also makes you think about some things in life (if you follow the stories more closely) like family, friends, politics, and many others.

Bottom line : Watch it! Most of you won't be disappointed.

Spectacular show
midnite1015 August 2003
Warning: Spoilers
Forever Knight is a reminder that a decade ago, television shows used to have charisma, good writing, quality acting and originality. It is about a 700ish vampire, ex-knight and now police officer, Nicholas de Brabant. His greatest wish is to become mortal, and although as we see more and more of his life (his past often seen through flashbacks) his "death wish" makes less and less sense, the quest for mortality is fun to watch. Of course Forever Knight had it's flaws as well, but they can be easily overlooked.

I do not agree with those who say the last episode was a disappointment. In my opinion, the show seriously needed the cruel, unhappy ending - without it, the relationship between the two main characters would've seemed just another Hollywood type boring love story, where everybody who really deserves it gets a better life at the end.

90's Greatness...It Bites Hard
Dark_Lord_Mark10 December 2014
This show was a staple of Channel 11 in NY in the late 90's on the weekends. It was fantastic, Nick Knight is a vampire cop that hunts criminals, some like him, some human.

The episodes were well written and filmed with a dark ambiance reflecting the series theme.

It similar to Highlander with the character being immortal, but this was less goofy and serious toned. It had some memorable characters like his partner Skanly. Him and Nick's relationship was great. They played off each other perfectly, one serious, one a trouble maker, but both good cops doing good.

This was fantastic and one of the great shows that reminds me of the 80's TV shows.

They DO NOT make them like this anymore. This was a guys show, for when networks cared about guys.

This is perfect for men and a must watch for people struggling to find good shows to try.

TEN OUT OF TEN!!!!

Couldn't finish it
Jahfet28 August 2011
After all the rave reviews I decided to give Forever Knight a try. I liked the concept and the actors, but after five episodes into the first season, I couldn't get one thing out of my head: how dd Nick become a cop if he's a vampire? I mean, don't cops have to undergo training of some sort? How could he have accomplish all of this if he's "allergic to the sun"? I understand them making him work the night-shift as a result, but to become a cop means undergoing certain physical and educational procedures (not sure the sunlight excuse would fly in this case). I know this is fiction, but the story needs to be believable to some degree for me to keep watching. Maybe it was explained later on, but after five episodes, I had enough. Shame, because I really liked Nick.

Excellent Series
dorotka2423 October 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Among my favorite TV series. I agree with a previous comment that it was very reminiscent of Highlander, containing numerous flashbacks to times long since past, recurring enemies and friends, and an otherwise similar feel with the character interactions and setting.

What I found particularly intriguing was the relationship between the sympathetic and essentially "good" lead, Nick, and the conniving, manipulative, "evil" side character of LaCroix. Their personalities clashed, and Nick would often argue and be repulsed by the inherent evil within LaCroix. Yet at the end of nearly every episode, Nick would seek LaCroix's advice on a number of topics. And LaCroix would always be eager to lend his assistance and often good advice mixed in with his deliciously wicked banter.

I highly recommend this series.

All around well done
Aadrian30 July 1999
Some channel surfers may have viewed Forever Knight merely as a "Vampire Cop" show. Much more was there. For one, you had great social and ethical questions brought to discussion from each and every week's show. Then there was outstanding character development. Cinematography was no less than award winning, the flash back sequences were beautifully executed. There was a spot that was truly unique. The flash backs helped people see that moral dilemmas are not something new to our time but have been there for all time. Truly a unique part to this series. Next we have beautifully scored music, followed by talented actors and actresses, and well written scripts. I think what attracted me the most to the show, as I believe many others would agree with, was the character development. You began to feel as the show progressed how well all the characters connected. There seemed to be some sort of on-screen bond that you felt they could even share off-screen, thus tying you into the characters as well. If you have never seen this series, take the time to watch a few consecutive episodes always airing on the Sci-Fi channel, you won't be disappointed!

Great classic
ensor_ostende-110 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
As young, i used to see this series in dubbed version, but this didn't annoyed me to appreciate an original idea of vampires : on of them tries to buy himself and wash away his sins, by seaking good all over the periods he travels ; he ends on the present day (by the time of the series) as a police detective, solving cases directed linked with his old time vamp pals.

Too bad I couldn't catch up entirely with the series, but I keep good old memories about it and I hope I manage to find her anywhere (well, this is not the kind of series you'll find here in France, but Paris is a city where you can find many "insolites" stuff !).

Simply is impossible not to love "Forever Knight" : great actors, perky Gothic atmosphère and beautiful structured stories ; myself, I'm a bad time writer and this series is an inspiration !!! 9 over 10, cause I couldn't saw the series completely ; but I manage, is surely be 10 over 10. Thanks & don't let me be misunderstood

Schanke, why did he leave show?
usbooks123416 January 2008
Does anyone know why Schanke left the show? I have tried to research this on the internet but could not find anything. I was just curious and thought maybe someone else knew something else about it. I just started watching this show recently and am up to the part where Det. Schanke is leaving. Anyone else think this show is similar to Moonlight? I like them both. I especially like the way Nick remembers times past and it shoots back and forth. But I do wish there had been more episodes of Forever Knight. Perhaps there is a web site dedicated to this show, I will have to check it out. If anyone is interested, there is a pretty good one for Moonlight, it has entries from Beth's journal.

Fun show, old school style
ILuvTVMovies21 November 2022
Back when shows were about the stories and not made in service to a political party.

Forever Knight follows the adventures of Nick Knight, an undead vampire turned police detective trying to be a good guy while fighting an internal struggle with his own twisted, vampiric urges.

Each episode shows him attempting to solve a new crime or mystery in the city. There is also an ongoing story about his past life throughout history.

The show has a haunting, moody and atmospheric soundtrack. The music isn't overbearing, it's actually very subtle but it adds a really great texture to the show.

You can find the show online very easily. Queue up the playlist, camp out on the couch and binge away. Vampire fans will enjoy it!

Often copied (by cheesy Buffy, Angel, Moonlight, Charmed) yet NEVER emulated!
imdb-2528821 September 2022
This Canadian fare is top of the line writing and excellent production values. No other copycat show can ever touch this, period! This was the pioneer of vampire shows, that so much tripe that came later tried to copy! I honestly can't understand why the production didn't sue Angel which copied EVERYTHING from this show (I only channels surfed thru that laughable cheesy garbage but top of my head: the caddy, the club, and oh yeah: vampire with a conscience who tries to be human!)? They could have stoped that garbage because Angel was a crapfest of poor production values, cheesy makeup, bad writing, so of course: the idiot masses gonna lap that up like they do Cheetoh's from between their many chins!

A very talented cast by all except for the ever insufferable "Natalie" which only ever had one sullen expression on her face and all she did was bitch at Nick. Really? The director couldn't say anything? The prods couldn't fire her? You want me to believe that a portly woman who was seriously challenged in the looks department would be this hot vampire's love interest?!

Apart from that, the rest of the cast was excellent: from the 3rd season (the very best!) and all the quirky characters it brought, to the first, it all was excellent. John Kapelos was surprising comic relief for seasons 1 & 2. Jeannette was great. I didn't care much for the 2 police captains: the first one appeared as mellow and stoned as his Stonetree name indicated. The 2nd one had just 1 dull expression, but they really nailed it with Blu Mankuma in its strongest season ever: the 3rd.

Tracy was wonderful as rookie partner for Nick. Her storyline with Vachon was just what the show needed, since Schanke never knew that Nick was a vampire. There's too much awesomeness here to mention. Just watch it. The rest of the very talented cast more than makes up for the poor Natalie casting. Nigel Bennet was spectacular as LaCroix. I cringe thinking which actor tried to copy him in the cheesy and subpar aforementioned remakes.

This is a solid 10/10, yes, in spite of that unfortunate and inept actress (who went on to do better later, she did say that she hated the nightshift but she should have resigned early on and one of the gorgeous Canada blondes who gues starred as Nick's love interest should have replaced her!) the rest of the cast more than makes up for Natalie's ignoble presence and terrible acting. (I also blame some directors for, time and again, not yelling "CUT!!" and correcting her poor acting choices. Weren't directions given in her script as to her character's motivation and feelings? I guess I have to partially blame the script writer who should have babied her with annotations, so she wouldn't have played her part all wrong.) I guess one of the episodes where she didn't get her bitchy way was the Valentine one where LaCroix grabs her by the neck, from behind. I so wanted him to finish her off right then and there at the restaurant!)

Anyway, this was and remains an excellent TV show. The music grabs you and won't let go till the very end. The finale is spectacular: they really went all out and did not disappoint. The characters had nowhere else to go. First show I like that ever gave closure in the end. Never mind the garbage copycats and their simpleton fans. A solid 10/10.

One of a kind show

Perhaps one of the two best tv vampire shows to ever air(dark shadows 1966 being the other)

It was very disappointing that Sony Tristar demanded the show be cancelled during the middle of 3rd season. After the backlash from angry fans, the show did make it thru five more shows including a series finale.(A finale most did not expect would happen in the way it did)

There were 70 episodes all together. Perhaps if Sony had listened to reason, it would have made a 4th season totaling 100 episodes. Die hard fans are trying to get together a FK movie of the week. I wish them the best of luck in the attempt.

I accidentally caught Forever Knight one morning on the Sci-Fi channel and instantly fell in love. The mixture of drama, action, romance, and tongue-in-cheek humor makes it one of my favorite shows of all time. The main character, Nicholas Knight, weaves an intricate web of love, loss, and pain while still holding the viewer captive in his spell. Spectacular!

lje3267729 May 2002
On today's TV screen the viewer can see anything from murdering rapists to idiots who stay on an island until they are booted off. Forever Knight was and is a breath of fresh air. It had a person(vampire) who was trying to use his talents to help the world. He was trying to be more than his fellow vampires wanted to allow him to be. It was and is a positive show with flawed characters. It is now on reruns on the Scifi Channel and I can tell you, I'll take this old and possibly campy show over talk shows, soap operas and so called reality shows any day of the week.

An examination of what is means to be "human."
StormBrn15 May 1999
Though Forever Knight could be summed up in two words--vampire cop--the series itself examined the aspects of humanity, and what it means to be human, through the eyes of a repentant vampire seeking to become mortal again. Geraint Wyn Davies portrays Nick Knight with the perfect balance of menace and innocence, humor and heartache. The supporting characters are well-rounded and adeptly played, particularly Nigel Bennett in the role of Lucien LaCroix, Nick's vampire master, who loves what he is. Father, brother, devil's advocate to Nick's tormented vampire, he exhibits a feline grace and unflappable poise reminiscent of the late Yul Brynner.

Another quality show that bit the dust
Sue-545 July 1999
Warning: Spoilers
Greetings from another fan. I stumbled across this great show at the beginning of the 3rd season - when Schanke got killed in the plane crash and when Tracy and Vachon appeared. I was immediately "forever hooked." I was able to catch the re-runs which enabled me to put all the pieces of the puzzle together. For me the show had everything: drama, humor, and a strong moral message which, as we know, is sorely lacking in this medium. Many of the story lines dealt with "human" issues such as the physically challenged and Aids. It came as no surprise to me when the show was canceled. Too much quality, I guess, for today's audience. Who knows? Perhaps some time in the future some TV exec will get smart and "Forever Knight" will have another life. Look at "Star Trek."

One final comment. On a trip to Toronto last Sept., I got to see the building that was used for the outside shot of the police station. I was thrilled!

Forever Knight, Cult Classic

A show I will always remember for the 1am time slot we had here in England. Having to stay awake because of my newborn baby and trying to find anything on TV worth watching, at such a stupid time of night. This is one of the only series I can watch today and it's still as great now as it was the first time I watched it. Absolute brilliance. I have just purchased series 1 and 2 from abroad and am desperate for series 3. A vampire while trying to regain humanity is playing the part of a police detective solving crimes. This is a must see for anyone with wonderful taste in vampire series. (Buffy+ Angel eat your hearts out).

If you can see reruns of it or find tapes somewhere, then I definatly recommend it. It features great actors and the storyline is unique and interesting. I definatly give it two thumbs up!

An Absolutly, unigue and wonderfull series
EspritSanglant22 July 2002
I love this show, it is such a new and unique idea. And, when you think of the vampire setting, its not like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" where the vampires are pure evil and work for the devil.... ahhh... *sort of thing*. The story of Forever Knight is a vampire named Nicholas Knight, who was brought across about 800 years ago. And he wants to become mortal again, he does not want to be a murderer and kill people for their blood. I GREAT TELEVISION SHOW!! *you will get hooked!* And in every show there is a lesson, each show keeps you watching and hoping for more!!! MY favorite Character is Lucien LaCroix played by Nigel Bennett.. anyways, It is a wonderfull show!
