A complete movie with good acting
maxjosh724 August 2018
I remember watching this movie as a kid with my aunties in a hill station in North India called Pauri. The cinema was full and there were lots of families and 80% were females. Honestly speaking even as a kid I really enjoyed the movie as a great family drama. I sincerely wish Amitabh should have taken some in depth roles in his angry man stardom. He did it later on when career was going downhill.

Songs are just okay but watch this movie for conflicts between the characters, their dilemma and fighting destiny. The acting is very class. I feel bad because we don't make such movies now. Family movies mean Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gam which was really boring. Romantic or sex comedy are trends in the name of love stories these days. It has been a long time the whole family may have watched a movie like this together in a cinema hall or in their drawing room..

Enjoy it as I am not revealing the story here.

Excellent

This. Movie has great performances from all the major stars Rajesh Khanna is fun to watch as he switches from a jealous lover to caring brother to a man of action and anger towards anyone who wishes harm to his long last brother.Shabana Azmi is functional. Vinod Mehra delivers an above average performance as a man torn apart as he suspects a Shabana of betraying him. When Rajesh finds out Bindu is trying to destroy his brothers marriage , watching Rajesh scorn Bindu is worth the price of admission. The storyline is typical of seventies movies but the performances and the direction make this movie a very uniquely entertaining and heart warming experience . You will not be disappointed . Watch it tonight even if you are not a Rajesh Khanna fan.

Nice family drama

Amar Deep is the Hindi remake of the Tamil Film Deepam which had Sivaji Ganesan playing the title role. It was produced by noted Tamil film actor & producer Balaji & directed by K.Vijayan, veteran film director.

The film was offered to Kaka when his career was in the doldrums. It became a hit & resurrected his career.

Rajesh Khanna delivers a mature performance & is well supported by Shabana Azmi & Vinod Mehra. A,K Hangal & Bindu (from the Khanna camp) are also good.

Songs by LP are nice but not of the super hit variety.

The film did excellent business because it drew family audiences to the Theatre.

Everyone will like this film, specially Rajesh Khanna fans.

God of acting

This movie prevails as one of the best performance in Rajesh khanna's career. The flip in the character and his charisma and dressing style is a treat to watch. The only thing that lacked in this movie is quality songs as his almost all films are backed up by great evergreen songs. All actors preformed really well in the film. The performance he gives especially the last scenes when he tries to convince shabana that he didnt do anything wrong in vinods life and somebody has wrongly portrayed his image is something that i havent seen by any other actor, performances like that are the reason why everybody loved him so much as he was a complete package.....I am so shocked listening to naseeruddin saying that he was a bad actor after he was passed as naseer himself was just an art actor with zero commercial essence in his movies and he pointed his fingers on such a talent like mr khanna who is the ultimate flagbearer of acting, looks, charishma and everything the industry needed.

The comeback of the Superstar with different outlook and style
jatinram20 August 2006
Yes, this is the grand film of the Super star Rajesh Khanna, which brought him back commercially in the lime light during the most down trodden trend of Hindi commercial film world. About 90% films were picturised during that time on action, sex, violence without acting, especially Amtibah brand cheap entertaining films. During completely adverse environment,Super Star Rajesh Khanna characterized a glorious characterization in this film with a completely brilliant depth touches of human feelingsand proved that the genuine extraordinary talent can not be suppressed longer. The character played by him in this film is slightly with negative touch and most of the scene performed by him were simply excellent. Special mention is required here to signify the scene, where he returned his own home after being insulted by Sabana Azmi and he went upstairs; his facial expression is classic in this scene.

Actually this particular scene is based only his classic extraordinary excellent facial expression as there was no dialogue in the scene. Apart from this, he entered an excellent glamour in the character, which only suited on him. The overall story of the film is most ordinary, but the class acting of Mr. Khanna made this film extra ordinary. Other performers of this film are also very good with their limitations/scope. But this film is basically centrally oriented around Rajesh Khanna and he proved the fact that he really deserves for this. It is surprising why Best Actor Award has not been extended to him for this film.

One of the best Rajesh Khanna performances ever
adaorahikwueme24 October 2023
Prem Nagar is my favorite Rajesh Khanna (Kaka) movie of all time, but his performance in Amar Deep is so powerful and it once again proves why he was Bollywood's first "superstar". This is a must see for my fellow Kaka stans. The late 70's was a rough period for Kaka as Amitabh Bachchan was producing hit after hit with Yash Chopra and Prakash Mehra, while a lot of Kaka's films from 1976-1979 were duds (even though he did make quite a few cult classics). I'm not Indian so I love researching and learning about the history of movies that I love. This movie is a major treat! So glad that I stumbled upon on it randomly today. Very strong performances by Kaka and Vinod Mehra, who is also in Amar Prem in a small, yet effective role. Mehra is also good in Anurodh, but Kaka outacts him in it. However, Mehra keeps up nicely with Kaka in this movie. They are equals acting-wise in Amar Deep, which is impressive because there's only been a handful of Bollywood actors who can/could keep up with Kaka. They are/were Amitabh Bachchan, Prem Chopra, Balraj Sahni, Feroz Khan, Pran, Ashok Kumar, Saeed Jaffrey, Anil Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, Govinda, Shashi Kapoor, Akshaye Khanna, Armish Puri, and my all-time favorite Hindi film actor, Sanjeev Kumar. Shabana Azmi is okay in the film. Her character becomes secondary even though she (and her story arch) are critical in Kaka's character and plot development. Shabana is an amazing actress but she could have been easily replaced by any top Hindi film actress of the day. I think Kaka was so desperate for a hit film that he did everything to steal the whole show; it becomes very apparent when watching Amar Deep. This is his COMEBACK movie-the movie that got him back on top for about 5 years. His career as a lead, A-list actor officially ended around 1987 due to ego, weight gain, hair loss, and alcoholism. The Hindi film industry will NEVER have a superstar like Rajesh Khanna again, at least, not in the 21st century if the industry continues to promote mediocre talent. Shahrukh and Bachchan have come super close to matching Kaka's fandom, but they haven't yet and most likely never will. The only reason why this movie doesn't get a "perfect" rating is because of the mediocre songs. Again, I think Kaka wanted folks to focus on his acting and not the songs. He definitely had buy-in regarding songs, playback singers, character development, direction, script changes, etc. This is one of very few Kaka films with bad music. Again, back in 1979, Kaka was in a major decline and needed a movie to push him back on top. Overall, it's an excellent movie and a must-watch/must own DVD for resident citizens of "Kaka-dom."
