Speedy and Daffy ahoy!

Not much mind-blowing and not a high point of the Looney Tunes cartoons, however coming from someone who isn't really a fan of the Daffy/Speedy series Go Away Stowaway wasn't so bad, one of their better outings. Do not expect anything new from the story, despite the fact that it's a different setting it is the same basic formula that forms the Daffy and Speedy cartoons and with little variation. The animation also isn't that great(though not as shoddy as See Ya Later Gladiator for example), it is a little lacking in vibrancy- there are this said some nice colours- and detail and it can look rather rushed-looking. The music, apart from perhaps the opening credits music, is nice and characterful though, and has orchestration parts that are lively and lush, some of the music Daffy/Speedy cartoons can sound tinny, stock and canned but not here in Go Away Stowaway. The dialogue is not particularly fresh but it is quite sharp-witted, Daffy's, his final line is funny(Bugs has the best final lines of any Looney Tunes character in his outings), more than Speedy's. The gags are nothing innovative but I could not help cracking a smile and laugh a fair few times, especially the ending and Daffy coming this close to being shark-bait. The crisp pacing Go Away Stowaway has helps and it didn't feel too hurried either. Daffy is fun and charismatic as he usually always is depending on the material, his characteristic manic energy is reduced here but even then Daffy is truer to what is so endearing about him compared to other cartoons with him and Speedy, where he came across as too greedy. Speedy is not as annoying as he can be, he is not as funny as Daffy and not as interesting but once you forget their pairing doesn't make much sense they are good foils for one another. Mel Blanc's vocals as expected are very exuberant and full of vigour, few actors have voiced multiple characters in one cartoon alone and give all of them a different identity with such conviction, though at this particular point Daffy's voice sounds deeper and a touch on the abrasive side. To conclude, for Daffy and Speedy together Go Away Stowaway is decent and one of their better cartoons but there has been much better. 7/10 Bethany Cox

Surprisingly decent!

Contrast to what people have to say, this short was one of the better ones that the W7-era had to offer, alongside "Norman Normal", "Skyscraper Caper" and "Rabbits Stew and Rabbits Too!" (though, to be fair, I actually AM a fan of the W7-era, most specifically Cool Cat, Merlin the Magic Mouse, Second Banana and those one-shot characters). The animation, while not abysmal, could have used improvement, as well as the gags, which carry out too long. Perhaps one of the higher Speedy Gonzales vs. Daffy Duck shorts, with amazing voice acting by Mel Blanc, lively and astoundingly heartwarming music by William Lava, and, of course, Daffy Duck getting his comeuppance and Speedy Gonzales still being the adorable "fastest mouse in all Mexico" he is. Decent art and background designs, I would say, plus a new restoration of this short aired on MeTV too! Pacing is nice and the plot catches the attention, along with that one cool shark gag. Overall, would recommend this cartoon if you're a Seven Arts-era fan!
