All rather predictable

this is a fairly average entry in the series. The problem is that the story is on very familiar ground so that it is very easy to guess what is going to happen next. The best films in this series are those which leave you guessing to the very end. This film is to do with a cosmetics firm which has financial troubles which according to Alfred Burke leaves them with only one alternative which is to burn down the factory. The only problem is that the staff don't know that.So you can guess at the ramifications.During the course of the evening in question Burke organises a film showing to cover his tracks.Heuses the Bell & Howeel Filmosound projector which i once owned. It always seemed to be in need of repair but i have fond memories of it.

Backfire!

Backfire! Cannot even be described as lukewarm.

Mitchell Logan (Alfred Burke) has been bought in by the elderly head of a failing cosmetics firm to turn round the business.

Unable to pay the bills, Logan decides that the best way out for the business is to burn the factory down.

The insurance money will cover the debts. It seems youngsters are not interested in the cosmetics they produce.

However Logan's wife leaves her valuable fur coat behind at the factory on the night that the arsonist is due to start the fire.

It leaves the cleaner dead, she is collateral damage. Logan finds out that the fire left a few loose ends.

An insurance investigator is not convinced that the fire was accidental.

It is a story that has been done many times. It was obvious that the Hungarian cleaner was going to buy it as well as the elderly factory owner who was reluctant to go along with Logan's scheme.

Burke does what he can do with the thin material. Logan and his wife are hissable villains.

The jaunty music each time the American arsonist appears was rather inappropriate.

Disturbing episode

Warning: Spoilers
When Mrs Chenko the lovable Hungarian office cleaner tells the head of the firm that her daughter is getting married in a couple of days you fear for her. And you'd be right. Alfred Burke (Logan) is the ideas man brought into the cosmetics company who has ideas of his own. He is the embodiment of evil and his wife isn't much more friendly. The head's daughter is also his secretary. After the fire - you know it's coming after the book-cooking, the lack of sales and the unpaid debts - she and the insurance investigator team up as the wholesome couple. There's some great 60s atmosphere in the beauty showroom and the Logans' penthouse. I always wonder who painted the pictures. But the story is quite painful as the good (and repentant) suffer.
