Go West!
angus_dei10 April 2005
Another great Stooges short. The boys serendipitously find themselves enrolled in Dental School after escaping their former employer's wrath (Emil Sitka with an Italian accent demoniacally swinging a cleaver---Shemp's high-sign warning to Moe: "George Washint'n! George Washint'n!"). Moe displays his keen mathematical acumen by taking the three-for-$25 option for their tuitions. Shemp falls head over heels for Vernon Dent's comely albeit enormously buck-toothed assistant, Margie Liszt, whose great uncle Franz had composed Hungarian Rhapsody Number 5 with this particular Stooges short in mind. And no wonder: where else will you ever see the Stooges sing in harmony, led by a ridiculously over-sized set of dentures? But Vernon Dent has the best line in the film when he implores the newly graduated (by default) Stooges to get as far away from his establishment as possible: "Go West! Go West!" Oh, if Horace Greeley could only have lived long enough to see this short! Of course he would have been about 150 years old, but why nitpick? The last scene, when Shemp has finally hung his shingle and set up shop, portends the future, for by inference Moe and Larry are his dental hygienists! It's never explained why Shemp gets to be the dentist, but you'll see right away that Moe and Larry knew what they were doing all along. The pace in this magnificent short never lets up, and Shemp, as usual, is brilliant. This one's a must-see.

I think I saw Russell Johnson in the background in the last scene .

Excellent Three Stooges short!
Movie Nuttball14 October 2004
The Three Stooges has always been some of the many actors that I have loved. I love just about every one of the shorts that they have made. I love all six of the Stooges (Curly, Shemp, Moe, Larry, Joe, and Curly Joe)! All of the shorts are hilarious and also star many other great actors and actresses which a lot of them was in many of the shorts! In My opinion The Three Stooges is some of the greatest actors ever and is the all time funniest comedy team!

A very good and different Three Stooges short. Vernon Dent, Margie Liszt, Dick Curtis, Slim Gaut, and Emil Sitka are in this one with The Stooges. I think that this one is so funny and the scenes with Dick Curtis are hilarious! I recommend this one!

"Painless" dentistry?
slymusic21 June 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Resting in the capable hands of director Edward Bernds, "The Tooth Will Out" turned out to be a very good Three Stooges short. Moe, Larry, & Shemp do a fine job together as usual, as do familiar supporting players Vernon Dent, Margie Liszt, Emil Sitka, and Dick Curtis.

Highlights from this short include the following (but watch the film first before you read any further). When the Stooges foul up as dishwashers, the crazed chef (Sitka) screams and chases them down the sidewalk with a cleaver. Sporting the familiar Coke-bottle glasses, Shemp causes nothing but pain for his first dental patient (Slim Gaut) as he drills his tooth. Before Shemp even begins, the patient lets out a groan, and Shemp tells him, "Save that for later, pal. You'll need it." When Shemp is finished drilling, the sheriff (Curtis), who also has a bad tooth, bursts in and throws the already hurt patient out the door. Then Shemp accidentally reads a carpenter's handbook in order to help him pull the sheriff's tooth!

Finally, two pieces of trivia for "The Tooth Will Out": First, probably many Stooge fans know that the final scenes in the boys' dental office were originally filmed for another Stooge short titled "Merry Mavericks" (1951), also directed by Edward Bernds. Problem was, with these dental office scenes intact, "Merry Mavericks" ran way too long, but Bernds and producer Hugh McCollum fortunately realized that they had enough material for another short, hence "The Tooth Will Out." The second trivial bit involves the aforementioned scene of the chef played by Emil Sitka, who yells and chases the Stooges after they break his dishes. Sitka remembered how on one of the outtakes of this scene, just for kicks, he decided to use a lot of foul language in his yelling, which rendered the cast & crew helpless with laughter. The scene as it appears in the film is still funny even without the language, but if a print of the outtake still exists, I would be quite curious to see it someday.
