Plot Summary

As a child, Anna Holm burned her face. This destroyed her looks and she grew up into a mean, bitter woman. She and her "friends" are blackmailers. One of her victims pays her by getting plastic surgeon Dr. Wegert to try to make her beautiful again. Anna becomes a new person, leaves her blackmailing cohorts, and becomes the governess of a young boy who will inherit a fortune. The boy has an evil uncle who wants to see the boy dead so that he will inherit the fortune. He hires Anna's former colleagues as assassins. Written by Mattias Thuresson

Trivia According to Alan Burgess' Bergman biography "My Life", director Gustaf Molander had trouble with the ending. He stopped the filming for two days without getting any reasonable ideas. Finally, he asked Ingrid Bergman what she would think was the best. Bergman suggested that Anna Holm should face a murder charge but be acquitted by the court. This is far from the ending in the final film. See more »

Quotes Dr. Wegert: Miss Holm, it's been a long time since I performed an operation like this and then it was to help the unfortunate victims of war. I made an exception for you, because I knew you were unhappy and I wanted to give you a chance. If I've succeeded in changing your outward appearance, remember, only you can change your inner self.
