An old clerk whose age had told against him in the battle of life was unable to find work. At last driven to despair, he heard of a dance hall where waiters were wanted, and applied for a position there. He almost got another rebuff, but the proprietor took a fancy to his pretty daughter, who had accompanied him, and offered him a position if he would let his daughter sing in the chorus of the company that entertained the patrons. The old clerk indignantly refused, but his daughter, realizing their need, persuaded him to accept the offer. The dance hall's environment was offensive to the girl's refined nature, but she bore it bravely for her father's sake, knowing he'd have difficulty obtaining work elsewhere. The proprietor forced his attentions upon her, but she met his advances with such dignity that his admiration deepened into respect and he asked her to be his wife. She refused him and he threatened to discharge her father. But the threat soon lost its force, for that very evening the old man died and the girl was left alone in the world. She left the dance hall and obtained work in a department store, while her former employer searched vainly for her. After a while she was discharged from the position and was in danger of privation, but a motherly old country woman who was visiting the city took pity on the girl and brought her to her country home. Love came into the girl's life in the person of her benefactor's son, a manly young farmer. She returned his affection gladly. Then one day the shadow of the past fell across her life: the dance-hall proprietor chanced to motor through the country town and recognized the girl for whom he'd always care. He told her that if she didn't marry him, he would tell the farmer that she'd been a singer in a dance hall. She refused and sadly waited for the blow to fall. The next day the farmer received an anonymous letter containing a picture of the dance hall showing the girl in dancing dress, and telling him that this was the way she had earned her living, but to the girl's surprise and joy, she found that the farmer loved her far too well to believe any evil of her.
