morality play
14 May 2024
Dr. Felix Klauber (Ricardo Cortez) has always been a good Jewish boy from a poor neighborhood. As a child, he defended crippled Jessica from bullies. He studied hard and becomes a respected doctor running his clinic for the poor. Jessica (Irene Dunne) is in love with him. He is convinced by his mother to start an office uptown for the money. He treats bored rich housewives looking for facelifts. Obligations and events keep him from his old life.

The construction feels more like a standard biopic except the subject is not anybody. It is not that dramatic and there is limited tension in the story. I am not that taken with Cortez. He seems fine as an older gentleman. Irene Dunne is the shiny object here and I wish this had more of her. This story is really a morality play and rather dour at times.
