Van Heflin and his partner have hit it big and are preparing to take their gold to town, when the partner decides to kill Heflin. Heflin does him in and starts to town with the dust, but bandits attack. They don't think the sand-looking gold dust is worth anything, so they leave him to carry it. He. Dumps it in a rover, then makes his way to town. He sends for foster son George Hilton. Hilton brings along his psycho friend , and Heflin starts to get scared. So he takes in Gilbert Roland as a fourth partner and they start off. But Roland has a grudge against Heflin.
Did I mention Klaus Kinski? Heflin looks puffy here, and scared, while Roland dominates this spaghetti western, dapper even when he's having an attack of malaria. There's plenty of tension in this movie, even in the battered faded print I saw. My one cavil is that the mine is in a desert with not a trees for days around. Where did they get the timbers to support the tunnel?
