Superb Musical Version! Outstanding in nearly every way!
25 December 2023
Went to the movies today - first theater film in a couple of years - and saw "The Color Purple" (2023). All I can say is that it is movie making at its acme. Superb in nearly all facets. The music for this musical version is spot on, and in many ways a total throwback to the decades it represents, mostly blueswise. One of the numbers, with incredible dancing, could be very eye-opening to some: a brand new song representing "copulating blues" songs of the 20s and early 30s - the kind which flourished in black jukes - is given full shrift! Several decades, from 1909 to at least 1947, are noted. Begins and takes place mostly in Georgia, though a couple of scenes are in Memphis, Tennessee. The dancing is equally fabulous and, again, in many ways period throwback to the decade represented: one part of one number reminded me of the Nicholas Brothers. They were rather obviously the influence. The "put-together" of this film was obviously a work of love.

Stars Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, and many, many others, all them flawless down to the smallest part. Look quickly for Whoopie Goldberg in an early scene.

Top.
