June Allyson shines
4 September 2023
It's turn of the century. Abigail Chandler (Kathryn Grayson) leaves Boston high society to be an opera singer in New York City. It's a struggle and she is forced to sing in a Bowery beer hall where her friend Spike (Jimmy Durante) is the lead performer. She tries to hide the scandalous turn from her sister Martha (June Allyson) and the rest of Boston society. Lawrence Tyburt Patterson Jr. (Peter Lawford) comes from a rich family supporting the arts.

Kathryn Grayson starts as the lead of this movie. She's the main subject until June Allyson takes over as the most compelling actor. She's the funniest. She's the most endearing. Jimmy Durante is performing the heck out of his character. I wonder if Martha should start as the main character. She has two of the best comedic set pieces in the movie. She really shines.
