High Hopes (1988)
8/10
Mike Leigh flick

Cyril (Phil Davis) and Shirley (Ruth Sheen) are a loving couple with high hopes despite their circumstances. They live in the King's Cross area of London. They hate Thatcher and named one of their cactus after her. The neighborhood is being gentrified. Cyril's mother, Mrs Bender, lives next to a Thatcherite couple. His sister is desperately nouveau riche.

This is a Mike Leigh film about the travails of the lower class. The rich neighbors are almost caricature Thatcherites. The daughter is ridiculous. It's a clash of classes. It's sadly amusing. It's poignant. It's a time and a place. It's complicated and conflicting and life.
