Lacking the Humor and Colorful Character Interaction of Its Predecessors
9 June 2023
This film essentially begins with a minor league pitcher by the name of "Gus Cantrell" (Scott Bakula) reluctantly facing the fact that he no longer has what it takes to continue to compete in his beloved sport. So, when the relatively new owner of the Minnesota Twins named "Roger Dorn" (Corbin Bernsen) offers him the chance to manage his triple-A farm club known as "the Buzz", Gus eventually agrees. It is then revealed that, although he gets along quite well with Roger, Gus does not particularly care for the manager of the Minnesota Twins named "Leonard Huff" (Ted McGinley) who--not only belittles him at every opportunity--but has also made several passes at his fiancé "Maggie Reynolds" (Jensen Daggett). To that effect, things quickly come to a head when Leonard takes a young player named "Billy 'Downtown' Anderson" (Walton Goggins) from the Buzz to play for the Twins--even though Gus has warned him that Billy simply isn't ready for the major leagues just yet. Now, rather than reveal any more, I will just say that this film wasn't nearly as good as its two predecessors mainly because it lacked the necessary humor and the colorful character interaction which gave the other two movies their overall flavor. At least, that is how it seemed to me. That being said, while I don't consider this to be a good movie necessarily, I don't consider it to be terribly bad either, and I have rated it accordingly. Slightly below average.
