Strange Brew (1983)

A Canadiana Comedy Classic.

Strange Brew is one of the most iconic Canadian films of alltime.

It features Rick Moranis & Dave Johnson as Bob and Doug McKenzie.

A couple of beer loving, typically Canadian hicks, who have set out to make a movie.

The story starts off with a bit of self reflexivity, as they and their audience watch a film about them making their own ultra budget sci-fi film.

But it flops...forcing them to make a run for it, before the angry audience members run them down.

During which Bob gives away their dad's beer money.

An action which acts to drive the plot forward.

Because, with their father demanding they get him his beer, they must come up with a scheme that can get them free beer - every working class Canadian's dream.

The plan they come up with involves a baby mouse in a beer bottle.

But it doesn't fly at the beer store...so they are forced to go up the chain, and straight to the source.

Elsinore Brewery.

Which just so happens to be in the midst of a power struggle, for control of the brewery, after it's president's mysterious and untimely death.

On one side, we have his predecessor, who has already remarried the wife of his recently deceased boss.

In kahootz with the doctor that oversees the psychiatric patients at the nearby insane asylum.

While, on the other side, we have the daughter and heir to the throne.

Who unwittingly teams up with Bob and Doug...and a down and out, former hockey great.

The crux of the plot revolves around the former group, planning to spike the beer with a drug that will allow them to exert mind control over the consumers, via audio ques from a synthesized organ.

With their scheme about to be unravelled and revealed to the world.

The villains start to engage in damage control...by getting rid of their competitors by any means necessary.

However, little do they suspect they'd be up against the dumb luck of Bob and Doug.

The whole thing is riddled with Canadianisms...from Joe Louis references, hosers, and plenty of eh!s...alongside Doug's infamous catch phrase "Hir-oo-koo-koo".

It may be stupid, but it's just as endering.

And would go on to influence a generation of future Canadian comedians, most notably Michael Myers.

As a Canadian myself, it's hard not to love this film...which has sci fi, paranormal, and even some romantic angles, that wonderfully compliment the low brow comedy at it's heart, integrated into it.

Making it quite the legendary film.

And an integral part of Canadiana culture.
