Kabzaa (2023)
2/10
A bland tale of Gangster Arkeshwara, KGF style.
16 April 2023
Copying a successful visual & narrative technique isn't going to be enough when the story chosen to be narrated is simply bland. The non-linear narrative takes us through 1945 to 1970s. Starting from Arkeshwara's childhood struggling days to the death of a loved one leading him onto the path of crime for revenge. We are also told he is a trained pilot and is in love with a princess, before the turn of events. How does Arka realize he is not just weapon for someone else to yield and build him empire by taking on the battalion of baddies forms the story.

In a gist, the director R. Chandru tries to pack in way too much that he can handle in this first part. Right from the monotonous gangster story stemming out of his need for revenge to even inserting a bland love story facing opposition from her royal father. The problem is how outdated this story is and how ineffective the quick edits were. Without nitpicking much comparing with KGF, I would rather highlight how none of the characters were not properly etched. Introducing a dozen villains was another blunder as none of them were given an opportunity to leave any mark or stand tall as a credible antagonist.

The writing is uneven throughout irrespective of the editing style. Upendra's portrayal of Arkeshwara suddenly changes entirely in the last 20mins where he is shown mouthing random punch dialogues or even dancing for an item number which was completely out of character considering how his character was approached up until then. The chemistry is non-existent making the love story between Upendra and Shriya Saran a tedious watch.

The climax scene announces the sequel with an entry of another major character. Setting aside the hype around it, one cannot stop feeling that the scene as a whole has one purpose i.e. To announce the sequel but has no other reason to be part of this movie or the scenes before. If the director does feel the major chunk of the story was saved for the sequel and this was one giant trailer for it, then it was a very bad attempt.
