This is by no means a bad show, but the plot is way too depressing to the point of being almost unbeareable at moments.
No matter what they do, all the characters end suffering horrible fates and dying violently.
I guess the point is pretty clear: There is nothing "cool" or "glorious" about war, the effects of war are always horrifying, causing a lot of pointless deaths of innocents...
A very bleak, very hopeless series. At the beginning there are some moments of humor, with after some episodes, the show gets progressively more and more tragic.
The animation and the soundtrack are good. But try not watching this if you don't want to get sad, because this is an utterly sad series, possibly even more than Grave of the Fireflies, if you can believe that.
