Bandit Queen (1994)
5/10
a controversial story of misogyny and the caste system
24 May 2022
I had never heard of Phoolan Devi before watching Shekhar Kapur's "Bandit Queen". No sooner had I watched it, I read that Devi denounced inaccuracies in the movie, while Arundhati Roy complained that Kapur made it without Devi's permission.

Whatever the case, the movie does show the predominance of the caste system in India, and the misogyny that comes with it. There's some pretty brutal stuff here. No wonder Devi rebelled against it.

I guess that the movie works as an introduction to Devi and her commitment to justice. Worth seeing in that sense. Shekhar Kapur went on to direct "Elizabeth" starring Cate Blanchett, while Phoolan Devi got assassinated in 2001.
