Caligula is not a good film. That said, it's rendered watchable thanks to its incredible cast, including Malcolm McDowell, Helen Mirren, the largely wasted John Gielgud and Peter O'Toole, and this man...gaunt, angular British character actor John Steiner. Steiner worked for years in Italy, so his presence in Caligula was no surprise, but his character Longinus was one of the few to make it all the way through the film without coming to a sticky end. Perhaps because he never succumbed to the sex and gluttony everyone else was indulging in? Who knows, but it's a huge privilege to enjoy 25 minutes with this memorable and underrated thespian in this valuable if very low budget short subject.
