The Timeless Troubadour

Warning: Spoilers
I have only heard some of the songs from the soundtrack album, and seen barely a brief glimpse of the film when it was screened late one night. It was the scene in the record studio office with the actor Rip Torn, as the character Walter Fox.

I don't know as the yanks say diddly squat about the music business but, the character Allen Garfield seems an atypical type exec. Full of his own self importance simply looking for the 'next big thing' for him to be said to have 'discovered'. Someone to make his name immortal flashing in, enormous neon lights for the entire universe to admire. But with barely grains of sand, blowing around in the dust bowl of his bonce. "Albert Schweitzer who's he play with?" "Oh a joke, I've got a sense of humour".

I love the film but have to ask the detractors in passing, what exactly were you expecting with this film? Anyone who has heard any of the songs, should know exactly what is in store.

What did you want his greatest hits, all of the top songs to leave you gasping for more?

It's a bit like the Walter Fox blokes spiel about the ballad Long long day, expecting more 'Hits' that would make him more dosh. But not even a hint of subtlety, or any degree of nuance.

Like the album the movie is about life the universe and everything, the scenes between Jonah and his wife Marion are perfect examples. What exactly was she expecting from their relationship, after a few years of his recording career? To be living the Vida Loca the high life, like a pop star? Just how many people actually manage to make it huge, without burning up like a comet?

You get the pure hypocrisy of the American music business of the 'Review of the 60's' my decade. Where the assembled music glitterati wallow in nostalgia, where everyone who was anyone from the era is bound to turn up. After all with such a monumental bash, why wouldn't the Beatles put in an appearance?

Jonah is expected to fit into the event by singing a song of his that he has left behind, because he unlike the music business itself has moved on.

Even they have to announce the most important album as my, favourite Beatles album Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. I am biased as a Brit but the best bands ever are British ones, yanks still love to bitch about the British music invasion. But they should be eternally grateful for it, where would their music be without it?
