SummerSlam 1999 Thoughts

SummerSlam 1999 was the 12th annual SummerSlam PPV event taking on August 22, 1999, at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The WWF was crushing WCW with ratings and the company was read hot. Despite 99 not being quite a great year in in-ring work, financially, it was one of the best years in the company history. We also got a big guest of Jesse Ventura who buried the hatchet with Vince. Ventura was goverment of Minneapolis and although it was controversial, Jesse back with the company was a positive. Main Event saw a Triple Threat between Triple H, Mankind, and the Champion, Stone Cold Steve Austin. Austin was battling through his injury would be written out to recover for a little while (which turned even longer later).

The Good - Main Event was awesome. It got a huge pop once Mankind got the pin. Many thought Mankind was just a filter in the gap as Triple H and Austin were the choices of winning but Foley getting the pin got praised by the crowd. All the superstars did well in the ring. There were some confusion on the rules by the commentary as triple threats were a new thing by the WWE at the time. Test vs. Shane McMahon was also a good match and the crowd got into it from start to finish. The tag team match for the belts was very good as Kane & X-Pac honestly was a pretty decent team and the Turmoil was very entertaining. Edge & Christian vs. The Hardys was the most fun. Both teams would have better chemistry as time went on.

The Meh - The Rock could have been booked in something better. Seriously WWE actully saw Billy Gunn as a top heel briefly. No kidding haha. Shamrock and Blackman's Lions Den match was by far the weakest Lions Den in comparison to the previous and the Hardcore Championship Match was decent.

The Bad - Tori vs. Ivory was very bad. Sloppy movements and the crowd barely cared about it. Women's division was pretty weak at this period before rising with the likes of Trish Stratus, Lita, and Jacqueline the next year.

Overall - Pretty average show. I think the main event, tag turmoil, and the European Championship match saved this show. 1999 did have a weak PPV slot for wrestling as WrestleMania 15 was average and Royal Rumble was very weak.
