Roller Derby Through Hell

Warning: Spoilers
The extremely unpleasant drama "Driven to the Edge" focuses on a female serial killer, who indiscriminately draws her victims into her orbit as a glorified taxi driver with a company called "Roller." The poor soul inside her vehicle is entrapped in a lair from which there will be no escape.

It was not only grisly, but highly unconvincing that the killer Jaye would use a baseball bat as the preferred method of execution. The names of the real life "Jolly" Jane Toppan (a sicko nurse) and Dorothea Puente (the deranged proprietor of a boarding house) are mentioned in the film and presumably serve as role models for Jaye, which is an alias for "Cindy." As a child, little Cindy was coaxed by her mother into killing her abusive father. The thrill of killing with the baseball bat became Cindy's lifelong habit.

The mood becomes more and more nauseating as Jaye attempts to groom Tess into becoming her partner in crime. The fairly lame "twist" in the narrative is that Tess turns out to be the baby sister of Cindy. That is no consolation for Tess's friends, Olive and Isaac, as well as for Tess's boyfriend, Danny, who are all murdered by "Jaye."

The film's conclusion was especially muddied in that Jaye inexplicably evades the authorities and continues to lure victims into her vehicle, as she continues apace with her killing spree as a driver. This slow-paced, lugubrious film thus becomes a perpetual a roller derby through hell.
