Mean Creek (2004)
7/10
Feel bad movie of year

It's very well made and a dismayingly plausible story. It seems like most adults have rose colored glasses of their youth, completely forgetting the extremely difficult situations that would arise.

And that's BEFORE the accident. Most people never had to deal a the situation like here after the accident. That said, I thought the movie atmosphere after the accident thoroughly reminded me of the intensity of emotions at that age. Probably most of us can recall that seemingly endless ride home as the sun sets.

Why only 7? It's extremely sad and depressing. This can't be overstated.

I do think the script and performances are extremely convincing in the first 3/4 or so, but noticeably less so in the third act. Culkin, for example, seems to become a bit too much of a sage. That said, the slight decline is visible only in contrast to how strong it was earlier.

For the eagle-eyed, there are several bits that seemed inspired by Stand By Me.

The production really shouldn't have killed the snail. It's lame, but it also rips you right out of the movie. I, at least, spent the next couple minutes thinking it looks like the production just killed a snail.
