Despite the negative reviews, I went ahead and watched this on a cold January afternoon. I had to ignore the reviews for a horror movie again, because time and again most reviews are entirely misleading.
I have no idea what some people are expecting when they decide to watch a movie like this, but it seems the thing they want the most is to be deeply disappointed by 1000 imperfections. Well I can imagine how exciting it was for those people to watch this bizarre, meandering homage to the original Wicker Man. It is very far from perfect. When compared to The Godfather for example, it's almost incomprehensible that these 2 things are the same art form.
As for myself, I decide to watch a movie like this because I love the horror genre. You literally never know what you're going to get. When you're lucky you get a great way to kill an hour and a half in a creepy, atmospheric mood. A lot of darkness, foreboding music, a pretty girl or two and of course some sort of evil entity, spirit, person or people.
You can pay attention if you'd like, or just let your mind drift. It doesn't really matter because there's not a lot to figure out, or if there is, you generally don't stand a chance, as it probably doesn't make any sense anyway. Which again doesn't really matter because you knew before you decided to press play, that horror movies very rarely have a great ending. If the "good" people live, that's always nice. But it's nice when they don't too. That one's harder to see coming and will generally be the only thing you didn't predict.
Death of Me succeeds on all of these points. If these are the things you look for, you will enjoy it. If you need your horror movie to be really gory, really clever or laugh out loud funny or if you really need jump scares - than you might want to pass on this. Otherwise, there's a lot to like here, produced, directed and acted very well.
