The premise to the whole storyline prior to 'that' ending is what was expected in the latter series of the Star Trek franchise.
But then you get to that ending, if going through the warp barrier had the affect on the DNA of Tom Paris to change him back it wouldn't of been so bad but the pre-human change was a jumping the shark too far.
