Season 2, Episode 6
6/10
Even though this is considered one of the series classics, unfortunately it didn't ring my bell.

Symbolism and irony are mentioned by Anthony as not being one of his favorite themes of the novels he's having to read in college, and it seems like there's a bit too much of that in this episode. It introduces Gerald McRaney as another one of Suzanne's ex-husbands, Dash Goth, and it is very apparent that he is still very close with Suzanne. His latest novel, "Being Belled", has not sold well, and efforts to make it into a movie have failed. The episode surrounds how he used Suzanne and Julia (and possibly Mary Jo and Charlene) as inspiration, and a lot of it is indeed metaphor, symbolism and a ton of irony.

Certainly literary in theme, this is a combination of slice of life light comedy and Southern tradition, and perhaps more affecting for those who are into such literature. McCraney goes from woman to woman, showing them how they inspired him, and creating on-the-spot literary descriptions of them that either embarrass them or make them laugh. This would have been more powerful for me if I had been introduced in a previous episode and we got to know more about him and his marriage to Suzanne as well as his relationship with Julia, as well as how he met Mary Jo and Charlene.

McCraney plays Dash as written, and it is apparent that he is taking the part very seriously. However, it is a dry character, and play did you for that reason, he doesn't really make much of an impact. Historically as far as the show's history is concerned, it is a very important episode because Burke and McCraney met and fell in lover here. Whenever there are montages of the show put together, several scenes from this are used, so you have to give the writers credit because obviously it meant something to them that viewers like myself don't easily pick up on.
