LoliRock (2014–2023)
10/10
One of the best magical girl shows I've ever watched

Warning: Spoilers
Although I'm older than the show's target audience, I absolutely adore the show. So much so, that it has become one of - if not my favourite - cartoon.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story/plot; getting to explore the girl's powers, their characters and backstories, as well as learning about Ephedia with Iris, was always a joy. I also loved all the episodes in between the significant/special ones. It was fun just to see the girls bonding and goofing around together, as well as Mephisto and Praxina trying to win. Not to mention Lolirock's music (which I sing along with every time).

(Heavy spoilers ahead!)

I usually don't tend to like protagonists, but Iris is (in my opinion) an amazing protagonist. The show shows us how she feels it is her duty to help other people, while also showing us how she's conflicted by wanting to have things for herself (like her time with Nathaniel). Being kind-hearted, for most of the series she puts others before herself (putting all her efforts into solving their problems) and also wanting to keep Nathaniel happy - which, in some episodes, is shown to take a toll on her. Some examples of this are when Iris objects to Nathaniel's request to be his girlfriend; she puts her Ephedian duties before her happiness. Or in Princess Brenda Part 1 and 2, where she also does the same thing. In this episode, however, the strain of keeping Nathaniel happy and putting the needs of others first is more evident (through the pathetic fallacy at the beginning of part one and the dialogue...)

Iris is a super-heroine who fights for a planet that she may not have even considered her true home.

I also hold a great love for Talia and Auriana, whose own struggles are shown throughout the show. Talia who, from an incredibly young age, had to deal with the death of her family whilst training all those years to become the incredible magician she is today. It seemed to me that, in the episode Xeris, she put all those emotions away to and finally cracked when she lost the only link to her family. Showing how much they meant to her. It was wonderful to see her find hope in Lolirock and discovering that her sister was alive.

Then Auriana, whose family had been taken away, stayed strong by always being an optimist. In the episode Desert Heat, she finally sees her brother again but immediately loses him again. The toll of this on her is shown but seeing he's safe cheers her up.

The transformation sequences are fabulous, I love the girls so much - I really wish there was a season 3. The show was taking such a great turn; making Praxina the new, main antagonist - showing that there is more to a person's character than just 'good' and 'evil' through her. It would be amazing to see that new plot progress. I would've also loved to explore Ephedia more, since the show didn't explore it very much (if at all). Spending more time with Lyna and Carissa, Aunt Ellen (now that they know her true identity), Iris and Nathaniel's relationship, new songs, new powers, seeing what the girls get up to and what they'll have to face - all things I'd love to see in a season 3!

Lolirock show is severely underrated in my opinion; it's a hidden gem. I enjoyed it so much and I adore the girls, and I think you'll enjoy it too. Lolirock holds a special place in my heart next to cartoons like SPOP and Winx Club, and I hope to see more of it in the future.
