Savage Pampas (1965)

Capt. Martín has an interesting mission!!

When you watch "Savage Pampas" you realize just how much things had changed for Robert Taylor. After all, the studio system had died and MGM's longest employed actor was adrift...looking for work elsewhere after well over two decades. And, not only is he working here with another studio, but he's in Argentianian western! Now get this...in the film, Capt. Martín (Robert Taylor) is working hard to bring prostitutes to his troops headquartered in the Pampas! After all, there are no women there, the men are scum, and morale is very low. Perhaps helping the men get lucky will improve the unit (so to speak). Seeing Taylor in a goatee tossing bolos is certainly something I never thought I'd see as well! Also, seeing him apparently raping an Indian woman midway through the film was quite a shock!!! Thankfully, they didn't show this...just him grabbing the woman. Clearly, this is NOT the nice all-American guy you saw in those old studio pics!

Overall, I disliked this film. Part of it was seeing that just about everyone in the film was depraved and unlikable. Part of it was that Taylor in particular was so unlikable. Not a terrible western but certainly not a very good one.

By the way, I noticed some called this a 'spaghetti western' but I don't think it was made by Italians but Argentinians. I can see the confusion as BOTH countries used Spain in which to film much of the movies. If you know otherwise, let me know.
