Preacher (2016–2019)
1/10
This show is "The Preacher" in name only

I loved the comics. Great storyline and character development. I mean, the whole genius of the story is in how everybody ended up where they are now, together, on this vendetta against God. The show threw all that gold out the window and ruined the story's potential out the gate with the pilot. This isn't a case of "the book was better", because the book didn't tell the story better, it told a different story.

It might have been a good show if they just titled it something else and said it was inspired by The Preacher. It's a totally different story, with characters who not only look different from the original, but also interact differently from the original. The show has similar elements of being bizarre, using dark humor, violence, irreverence, etc. just in a less cohesive, well-thought-out way.

Keep in mind, comic books are basically like storyboards for a show/movie. The look of the characters and the scenery is literally drawn on a piece of paper for you. Likewise for the dialogue being spelled out for you. They changed Tulip the most. She almost looks Middle Eastern in the show (she's half-Ethiopian), though in the books she's a blonde, white chick. Were they even trying? They got the "strong female lead" part, but she's missing her feminine side and love for Jesse. So she's just a cliche with no depth now. I have to say, Cassidy is pretty well-cast, but Jesse isn't as cool or charming as he is in the book. So they got the main character wrong.

There's also zero chemistry between the characters. Then again, they totally changed the plot, so all of their history is different from the books. I had expected great things from AMC, with their track record of putting out high quality shows, but this was a bad adaptation.
