The Meaning of the Marriage
18 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
An early scene in the film depicts a lovely wedding ceremony between Lisa and Paul. One of the themes of the film is the implication of taking vows. The protagonist Lisa will tenaciously remain committed to her groom, who is convicted of both embezzlement and murder. With Paul in prison, Lisa goes undercover to investigate the shady Venture Investment Group in order to get to the bottom of how and why her husband was framed.

"Secrets of an Undercover Wife" does not paint a pretty picture of men. Lisa develops a friendship with a bondswoman named Max, a widow who assists her with the tricks of infiltrating and spying on the Venture group. Max tells Lisa, "you never know the stripes of any man until he's cornered and desperate." No words were ever truer than in the world view explored in this film!

The best scenes are those when Lisa had changed her hair color to a blonde and has taken a secretarial job, where she leads on the Irish mafia don, Michael Donovan (a.k.a., Michael Fallon) much to his frustration and growing anger. Lisa is playing a dangerous game with a thug "with a rap sheet longer than a toilet roll." But Lisa perseveres, and the tipping point occurs in a scene where she and Max disguise themselves as janitors from Acme cleaning to steal vital evidence off of Michael's computer.

Even when he figures out that Lisa is married to Paul, Michael is so besotted that he kidnaps Lisa and takes her to the Caymans, where he has stashed the ten million dollars which Paul has been blamed for embezzling. The thoroughly whipt Michael finally corners Lisa in the gated home belonging to his dear "Da." It will be up to Max to engineer a thrilling ending to save Lisa and save the day.

Lisa's dear friend Diane, who sadly makes an untimely exit in the film, gives Lisa's a pearl of wisdom when she tells her just before her wedding, "I have faith in no men, but I do have faith in you." The film makes the point that the choice made by Lisa to place her faith in Paul was part of the marital compact that she took seriously. The long road to redemption occurs with Lisa fighting against all the odds to prevail.
