This is something to watch after reading the Manga

Warning: Spoilers
This would be X/1999 or Clamp X at my rental store a very long time ago. I recall this was designed to be a Romeo & Juliet film. It's a shame they don't have some form of an extended version because this very falls short.

There is a lot missing with the story, this was also back during Y2K where people hoarded bottled water and canned goods. That aspect is missing when you watch it now, back in 1996 we heard about all that stuff. This was driven by Armageddon, and very "hush hush" about.

The fights scenes are nice to look at, you get a good feel for the Computer in this film, which sucks because I felt that was the closest to doing it right. Which is why I mentioned you want to read the Manga first. There's so much within each plot that makes it a great story.

I would say some of it is lost in translation as well, it's strange to say because some of the voice actors are better in the American translation. I don't really have an opinion on that, most people who watch it in either language seem to understand this movie the same way.

This is why I think it's sad that this movie didn't get another hour to explain everything that was going on. They mildly brushed on a few ideas, it was more direct with two Kamuis.

The other problem I had was the lack of character development, but it would be way too time consuming. Every character in here has so much going for them, and explaining their story while raising a barrier doesn't help.

We barely got to know their powers, who they're with, or much of anything about them before they get killed. This is also why I believe part of me wanted to know more about them so I ended up finding the Manga books translated into English and there's a lot to work with here.

This was simply an impossible story to sum up so fast, especially back in 1996, I was just amazed they released it so early. So when Fuma and Kotori are taken away, it's understandable that you make Kamui angry.

I did like the animation of the fights, but it's after I read the Manga that I really appreciated this movie. I guess if I watched it for all the powers and shock value I would have rated it a 5 or 6, the opening scene where Kamui sees his mother is pretty epic then the ending with the decapitation is pretty cool.

There are some good parts, but it really felt too rushed. It reminded me of those arcade games you play where it counts down from 10 and you have to put another quarter in it.

Read the Manga, then give this film a watch. You would understand why I rated this a 7, which I'm aware it's tough to find but worth it. There's is so much more backstory this film was unable to illustrate.

Far as this movie goes, it's supposed to be Armageddon driven and has a ton of other spiritual aspects that it did convey. This doesn't make it a great movie, but it did draw a huge audience. Half of the people who watched this movie were in awe with how Kamui cried, holding Fuma's head and questioning why it all happened this way.

I felt this was worth watching, and to be fair, they never finished the Manga so interpret this all how you want to.
