Tropical Cop Tales (2018–2019)
1/10
A low-budget punch to the ear
21 February 2019
I've never had someone grab my head, dig his thumbs into my eyes, and continuously scream into my face for fifteen minutes, so I can't say for sure how that would feel. Having watched an episode of "Tropical Cop Tales," however, I have a pretty good idea.

Is this show an elaborate practical joke? A social experiment? A money laundering scheme? (If so, it would explain why the show looks like its production budget wouldn't be enough to buy a Geo Prizm.) There are myriad scenarios I would accept to explain the existence of "Tropical Cop Tales," but the theory that it is an earnest attempt to mount an actual comedy series is one I reject outright. It is simply too improbable.

Adult Swim's hodgepodge of original programming is famously, perhaps deliberately, hit-and-miss. Tastes in humor are varied, and AS has never hesitated to create content aimed at the fringes. Sometimes it works brilliantly, sometimes it's a bust.

"TCT" is neither hit nor miss; it is more like a misfire so severe that it shoots the bullet backward, panicking all around and coming within inches of turning a young girl into a paraplegic. Does that sound like a hilarious scenario to you? Because it is on par with the amount of humor contained in "Tropical Cop Tales."

I am trying to make myself say something positive or encouraging about any aspect of the show whatsoever, but it would be a lie. I can't tell if the cast is horrible or if they're doing the deliberately-bad acting shtick of which AS is so fond, but it's genuinely bad to watch either way. As mentioned before, the production values are nonexistent. Like Ed Wood nonexistent. The writing... Look, if you told me the "writers' room" was in reality a group home for semi-independent adults with cognitive impairments, I would believe you. I would believe you in the face of compelling evidence to the contrary.

I can't even watch the promos. Literally 30 seconds of this show is too much. Canceling "Tropical Cop Tales" would be the decent thing for AS to do, but the only truly moral act would be to find a way it could be dis-created.
