This show starts to really show the backgrounds of the E/R staff. Carter is tasked with finding he parents of a teenage accident victim who Carter and Benson were unable to save. Carter finds who he thinks are the parents but is horrified to find out that the teenager is not their son. Carter's day is a series of difficult situations and he is very discouraged. However, something happens at the end of his shift, he treats a patient that renews his enthusiasm for his chosen profession.
The whole show has many humorous moments which break up the tension. We start to see a lot of what makes these doctors and nurses tick.
