Imitates rather than innovates
31 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
TIYANAKS is a typical teens-stay-in-a-haunted-house type ghost story from the Philippines, shot on a low budget in the Tagalog language. It's amazing just how many similar productions were made over the years - not to mention the incredibly prolific SHAKE RATTLE & ROLL series - showing the local demand for horror fare. This one's a clichéd effort featuring lots of attractive actresses in form-fitting clothing and in peril, various ghostly appearances, an old woman who keeps popping up randomly, and generally low key film-making procedures. Unfortunately, it's a film that's always content to imitate rather than innovate.
