30-LOVE (2017)
8/10
Not the typical sports film

Warning: Spoilers
This is a well-made movie about a man succumbing to his darker self during the grief caused by the death of a close loved one: his wife. Emotions overtake reason in this slice-of-life cinematic work, which is part sports film (tennis) and part family drama. The film challenges the audience to consider the conflicted feelings towards the deceased, the self, and others still living–during a grieving period. The movie adds to the cannon of cinema a different type of journey. The movie is at times uncomfortable to watch; this is on purpose. Easy answers are not presented here. The musical score is superb at capturing tension. A star returns to the screen in the form of the wife's mother and her bold voice: Brenda Vaccaro. The movie could have benefited by offering a richer, more detailed portrait of the husband's psychological motives. Still, this is territory that will not lead the viewer down any familiar paths and rewards with its dialogue.
