Magic City (2012–2013)
6/10
The rating's way too high.

Good things about the show:

  • Beautiful actresses in beautiful dresses. Olga K. is exceptionally beautiful. The scene in the pilot where she's sunbathing in the nude is electrifying. All of the women in the cast were well chosen. Kelly Lynch, although not the best actress, is a nice surprise. Interestingly, Andy Garcia's daughter's also in this. Marais and Satine are lesser known, but also very attractive. - The sets, clothes from the 50s/60s. - The story outline is OK. A hotel owner trying not to lose his hotel to the interfering mobster etc. Not bad. - Danny Houston. Great actor and always good in villain roles.

Bad things about the show:

  • After a while (a couple of episodes), once the eyes and mind have adjusted to the things that are nice to look at, the show fails to deliver on almost every count. It doesn't really go anywhere. - The script. I think Glazer just wanted to make something cool while forgetting to deliver a better script. Should've concentrated more on casting and writing than everything else. - Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Some have written that this is his best performance. If that's true, then the guy must be a terrible actor. Jon Hamm (Don Draper) would've killed in this. In my opinion Morgan's best was The Comedian from Watchmen. I haven't seen him in The Walking Dead, but that show's trash anyway. - Steven Strait. He may be handsome, but his acting is sub-par. I've seen him in this and SyFy's The Expanse. The acting's the same, which should tell you everything. The guy playing the brother who's going to law school is not a good choice as well.

All in all a rather unsatisfying series. Would've probably worked better as a three-part TV-movie series (with a better male cast of course). 5.6/10
