The Judy Garland Show: Episode #1.10 (1963)
Season 1, Episode 10
8/10

At a time when both their careers (particularly Rooney) were on decline, this reunion shows how really terrific they were together. There's something about working with Judy that makes Rooney seem less abrasive and more fun than his later work usually shows.

And FUN is the key word here. Judy's vocals are great as usual, but Mickey really steps up to the plate with his singing, dancing and general playfulness that makes me wonder why he gave up doing this sort of thing in favor of dramas and straight comedies.

The show is really well directed (watch how long some of the sequences go without a single camera cut) and its refreshing not to see a variety performer have to look at cue cards while they do their songs and bits. Instead they make a lot of eye contact as they look right at each other. These two are real pros and I wonder why nobody approached them to do more together after this.

A genuine delight.
