Review of Hardgore

Hardgore (1975)
5/10
Welcome to where time stands still, no-one leaves and no-one will.

'My sister is really into horror films'—so began a conversation with a work colleague that led to a brief exchange of emails with his sister and, not too long afterwards, a copy of Hardgore landing on my desk, hidden inside the box for another DVD wrapped in a plain envelope. I wonder if my workmate knows just precisely what his sister likes to watch...

More porn flick than horror, this deviant slice of 70s wrongness stars Dianne Galke as Maria, a nymphomaniac masochist transferred to Fox Hollows Sanitarium where a strange satanic cult indulges in wild orgies and bloodthirsty rituals. As steamy as all of the graphic sex action is, the adult nature of Hardgore soon gets very tedious; thank heavens then that the film is also pretty darn trippy and occasionally nasty enough to just about warrant a viewing, with an all-pervading psychedelic vibe (aided by a really cool soundtrack), some bizarre hallucinatory dream sequences, and just a touch of gruesome gore (a slashed throat, a severed schlong, and a beheading).
