Review of Suicide Room

Suicide Room (2011)
6/10
One Big problem

pros:

-beautiful gorgeous super hot main character (God the guy who plays Dominik is just gorgeous)

-the personalities are very dynamic, making all the characters truly feel like real people.

-The wardrobe design is great, particularly with Sylvia (human form). Her pink hair is gorgeous and I was shocked when I finally saw her in full sunlight towards the end because she looked so utterly scruffy and ruined while still coming off as mystical.she was like a broken witch.

-the design for the 3d world was also brilliant. It was charming and beautiful and alluring.

-the acting is great and always very convincing.

-It is a captivating plot about Sylvia's dark bewitchment which dragged Dominik deep into depression. the bullying started the flame, but Sylvia is the one who truly pulled him in. She did it out of loneliness, without realizing how selfish she was being. There is then an ironic beauty in the fact that they end up falling in love, because this makes Sylvia the hero to Dominik, when really she is the one who dragged him down in the first place. It's a very complex situation that was very intriguing.

however, MAJOR MAJOR CON. In the first half of the movie, it implies over and over and over again that Dominik is absolutely gay. This predicament is established as the main conflict of the movie, but is then much too suddenly discarded. It should have not been implied that Dominik is gay in the first place because it is absolutely NOTHING but a distraction. It creates much too many confusing plot shifts and has kept me from appreciating the plot at first.

This is basically how the movie pans out:

1. rumor gets out that Dominik is gay.

2. the first half of the movie constantly implies that Dominik truly is gay.

3. All of a sudden, he falls in love with Sylvia, and the viewers are left thinking "umm....wtf??!!"

The rumors that Dominik was gay should have remained RUMORS for the entire movie. It should have been made clear that Dominik is in fact NOT gay from the very beginning in order to avoid unnecessary confusion that really adds no depth to the plot whatsoever.
