Review of The Valiant

The Valiant (1929)
6/10
Nothing to do with talking pigeons

Warning: Spoilers
Here's proof that some filmmakers weren't completely befuddled by the development of talking pictures. Though parts of The Valiant are as creaky as you might expect, there are some really remarkable things here: long tracking shots, expressionistic use of light and shadow, street scenes that actually almost seem realistic, and...intertitles. Hey, it was 1929--you can't expect miracles! On top of all the impressive visual accomplishments, the sound recording is also superior to your average run of the mill early talkie. Some of the acting remains a bit on the broad side--I'm looking at you, Henry Kolker!--but lead Paul Muni is pretty decent as a killer with a conscience. It's far from perfect, but well worth a look.
