Robots run amok during a live news report.
18 September 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Movie is about robots who go berserk during a live broadcast of "Nouveau Reports", a GNN (Global News Network) news program. The report is being broadcast from New Town located on a small tropical island that is home to Mega National Industries, a privately owned energy (oil) concern, and it's employees. Seems that the owner and CEO of MNI, Gordon Standish, has a doctorate in mechanical engineering and a thing for robots. So when he's not running his oil corporation he's churning them out and integrating them into his New Town island community to perform in almost every professional capacity.

The news report was done quite well, I thought; it had a professional and realistic feel, and the actress playing Christiane Nouveau was very convincing. GNN is an obvious take on CNN. As well, one or two first names reminded me of people who have worked on CNN. I thought that a movie occurring thru and as part of a live news broadcast as an "unexpected development" was innovative. In this instance, the unexpected development is that a robot shoots one of MNI's employees during a "friendly game" of soccer that was being reported on by Christiane Nouveau. "Robots and humans working together, playing together" is a sample of her line before the spoil sport robot knocked off a player.

For about half the movie the scenes alternate as a "talking & reporting" drama between Christiane, her producer who was directing her while watching on monitors from his set up at Gordon Standish's home, and an anchor man back at a GNN news desk. Instead of a whole scale panic with people running all over the place while robots rampaged and killed, the robot mutiny is done quietly and indirectly; off camera. We know what is happening and what has happened thru Christiane's report, thru a few dead bodies lying here or there, seeing some oil platforms in flames, and an incident or 2 involving individual robots. The robots became active as a group for the first time late in the movie as they chased and hunted the GNN employees which added a bit of welcome robot action and suspense. My rating is based on the fact that the acting was good and I thought that the idea of a movie occurring thru and as part of a news broadcast was creative. Perhaps with a larger budget they could have done more with the robots and my rating would be higher. I dunno. Love, Boloxxxi.
