Imagine That (2009)

Imagine an entertainment world without Murphy! He elevates most any material, including this otherwise flawed film

Evan (Eddie Murphy) is a talented and hard working investment strategist for a large firm. Although he has a young daughter, Olivia (Yara Shahidi), he rarely sees her. But, now, his former wife insists that she needs him to take care of her for a number of weeks. Okay, but dad has a lot to learn, for certain. One of the main problems is that the little girl, despite being a preschool student, can't live without her security blanket. She screams if is taken away and Evan is receiving instructions for the teacher to "work on" the situation. Olivia, too, is somewhat annoyed that dad can't make pancakes from scratch or let her stay in his room at night, when she gets scared. But, soon, Evan learns to slow down and start listening to his daughter. When he does, what a discovery he makes! Olivia can communicate with a trio of princesses, when she is underneath her blanket, and the gals give good advice. The royals can even predict the futures of companies that Evan has to recommended to the firm! Whooee! Soon, Evan is a rising star at work, although he has competition in a fellow worker (Thomas Haden Church) who uses Native American mysticism in his approach. Who will snag a promotion from the big bosses (Ronny Cox and Martin Sheen)? And, will the blanket work its magic forever? This film has some possibilities but, the central concepts are difficult for children to understand. Thank goodness Murphy is the star, for he is so deft at comedy, one keeps watching anyway. Shahidi, also, is a doll and enhances the film's charm. All of the supporting cast, including Church, Cox, Sheen, and the rest, do fine work as well. Also nice are the sets, costumes, wonderful special effects and competent direction. But, as stated, the story might be confusing for kids, who don't know about investments or how Murphy is using the blanket to make wise work decisions. However, watching EM sing, dance, wisecrack and act silly makes up for a lot. So, if you are searching for family films, especially ones for wee gals, this is a good choice. You may have to explain a few things, though, as the tale unfolds.
