Review of Alegría

Alegría (1999)
4/10
A long dreadful ad for Cirque du Soleil
29 December 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I am astonished that this film is rated so highly (at 6.0). But I'm not surprised, given Canada's notoriously low standards, that it was nominated for 4 Genies. Seriously, what more evidence do you need that those awards need to be scrapped? As a Canadian myself, I'm embarrassed for us all.

The film bears precious little resemblance to either the Cirque show Alegría, nor to an actual film. It exists in some bizarre in-between world where something that looks like a film is used entirely and shamelessly to stir interest in the actual show, by showing only fleeting glimpses of the work, rather than telling a story. I still have half an hour to go, but my patience is gone, and I'm done with it.

There are some genuinely creepy moments (unintentional, I'm sure), particularly with the ringleader embracing a female child from behind, and with random nutcases wandering about. It's not funny or sad. It's just stupid and mostly creepy.

With the names attached to this project, I expected much, MUCH better. They should be ashamed.
