The Man in Grey
29 August 2009
Warning: Spoilers
The critics may only give it three out of five stars, but as long as it features in the book 1001 Movies You must See Before You Die, I'm not complaining or missing it. Set in World War II, two strangers meet each other at an estate auction, and through a series of flashbacks you see how they might have known each other before through family history and connection. The flashbacks reveal beautiful Clarissa Marr (Phyllis Calvert) and her friendship with bitter, reduced to poverty Hesther Shaw (Margaret Lockwood). As their fates entwine and paths divide, Clarissa marries into higher class with handsome but cruel Lord Rohan (James Mason), while Heather becomes an actress. But the two women meet again with Clarissa bringing scheming Heather into her house. Clarissa tries to find true love, but Heather is plotting to take everything that belongs to her. Also starring Stewart Granger as Peter Rokeby, Nora Swinburne as Mrs. Fitzherbert, Martita Hunt as Miss Patchett and Raymond Lovell as The Prince Regent. The performances are good, and there are some eye-catching scenes, so I can certainly see reasons it is a must see. Good!
