***MAJOR SPOILER*** Depressing film set in an anonymous Canadian, I think, city about a recluse who's life is quickly falling apart together with his sick and alcoholic step-mother.

Francis, Aidan Gillem, find himself stuck taking care of his infirmed step-mom Sal, Susan Tyrell, who's becoming-in constantly demanding his complete attention-more then he can handle. There's also Sal's live in lover Vic, Mark Boone Jr, the handyman who made himself at home by using the lame excuse of fixing the bathtub which is now going on for some six weeks. It was for a while that Francis' deep religious convictions, instilled in him by Sal, kept him from going completely insane in the world of suffering and depression he finds himself in. Now with everything quickly falling apart Francis turns against his Catholic upbringing, as well as belief in God, feeling that its, in putting him in the mess that he finds himself in, the reason for all his problems.

While not on his job at the local photo lab Francis spends his free time spying on his next-door neighbor Gloria, Emmanuelle Seigner, whom he's got, in her walking around her apartment in her underclothes, the hots for. It's later when Francis saves Gloria from being mugged that she, despite of his extreme shyness towards her, becomes fascinated as well as falls madly in love with him! Francis' relationship with Gloria, which at first is strictly platonic, starts to get under his step-mother Sal's skin. Always putting Francis on a guilt trip in him living in sin, even though both him and Gloria are single, is very hypocritical on her part to Francis. Sal is doing just that with her slobbery boyfriend Vic as well as getting drunk every day which is a bigger sin then what her step-son Francis is doing. Especially when drinking booze is, in the sorry condition that Sal's in, like slowly committing suicide which is a mortal sin in the Catholic Religion.

It's later, while still spying on her, when Francis discovers or thinks he does that Gloria-a life long vegan- who told him she refrains from eating animal products eating raw meat that he completely freaks out and goes off the deep end. This leads to him also openly revolting against Sal that leads to her and Vic, who's completely oblivious to whats going on, to come to blows with him. During the knock down and drag out fight with Sal Vic ends up dead beaten to a pulp with Sal's, where she obviously keeps most of the booze she's drinking, wooden leg!

***MAJOR MAJOR SPOILERS*** Francis now ready for a straight-jacket and padded cell starts to find out, or does he, that Gloria is part of a cannibalistic cult that she invites over to her apartment to feast on human flesh! The movie is so ambiguous about Gloria's lifestyle and eating habits that your not quite sure if she's a cannibal or not but the by now deranged Francis is more then positive that she is! That's until he confronts Gloria alone in her apartment and finally finds out the truth which is purposely kept from those of us, by now totally confused to what's going on, watching the film!

The movie "Buddy Boy" is a lot like that all time "Bad Movie" classic "Shrike of the Mulitated" but in its trying to be serious nowhere, intentionally or not, as funny. As hard as actor Adian Gillen tried he just wasn't that convincing as the nerdy and speech defected, by having a hard time stuttering, wallflower that he tried to concave to the audience. It's that very reason that should have been the most unconvincing part in the film in Gloria-a real hot number-falling heads over heels for Francis who wasn't that bad looking at all, in fact you can even say he was handsome, which wasn't that unconvincing at all!
