Warning: Spoilers
Homer's unhealthy and excessive eating habits put a strain on his heart, and when Mr. Burns threatens to fire him he has a heart attack. The doctors advise him to have an operation as soon as possible, but it's far too expensive (and he has exchanged his health insurance at work for a pinball machine!). His only hope now is a highly dubious "doctor" who "will perform any operation for $129.95". The situation might seem too morbid to be very funny, but this is a simple, subtle and steady episode that doesn't go overboard with the morbidity. The Simpsons, and especially Homer, are exclusively at the center, but there is time for brief appearances by many supporting characters as well. It also has some memorable bits of animation, from Homer's jiggling stomach to the tear in Marge's eye after the operation is over successfully. *** out of 4.
